All Up In MySpace: Drowning Pool’s Combat Rock

October 11th, 2006 // 2 Comments

promo3-low.jpgIt’s time for another entry of All Up In MySpace, where we look at artists who are flying high on MySpace’s music charts. Today, we look at the Texas screamers in Drowning Pool, who are responsible for the jock jam “Bodies”–and who are sitting at No. 2 on MySpace’s list of unsigned bands after four years that saw them lose their lead singer and get dropped by their label.

Name: Drowning Pool.
Number of MySpace Friends: 118,956.
Influences: Anger, rage, resentment of the opposite sex.
Sounds like: Anger, rage, and resentment of the opposite sex, with a lot of compression.
Sample comment from a friend:“i seen you guys at camp annconda you guys rule. you have restored my faith in the american people. fuck cnn”
Can they be famous … off the Internet? Despite their original lead singer’s death, Drowning Pool may actually be one of the few turn-of-the-century nu-metal acts to have a shelf life. Some credit goes to “Bodies,” which has been a go-to jam for sports events and troops overseas since its release; the band has also been tirelessly making the USO rounds, which likely helped them beat out Toby Keith for the No. 1 spot on an informal musical poll of soldiers stationed in Iraq.

I loved their debut but things did take a turn on the second album. Still, I didn’t think it was bad enough to lose a record deal.

Having your lead singer die on the tour bus is about as rock and roll as you can get…they should have been able to keep their label deal based on that cred alone…

Dying on the bus is about the only thing more rock and roll than leaving a gig in an ambulance…
