Scottish Pop Crooner’s Post-Aneurysm Return

edwyn.jpgEdwyn Collins, the former lead singer of the brilliant pop outfit Orange Juice, suffered a brain hemorrhage in February of 2005; in its aftermath, he spent six months in the hospital and had to relearn how to walk, talk, and read. What’s pretty amazing is that, only a year and a half after suffering the aneurysm, his road to recovery reached his London recording studio, and he’s been posting brand-new songs, like “Leviathan” below, to his official MySpace page. We’re pretty huge fans of Orange Juice and Collins’ solo work around here, and the fact that Collins’ unique, tremulous voice is able to speak–let alone sing–again is pretty amazing.

Great news — I was just thinking about him the other day too. Listening to Orange Juice stuff now just makes you frustrated with all the bands that only honed in on the Velvets side of what they did and not the Chic side.

It’s my understanding that the versions of those three new tracks on the myspace page were recorded and finished before Edwyn took ill. Either way, “Leviathan” in particular is stunning, and it is truly heartwarming to know he’s back at work.
