All Up In MySpace: R & B Singer Works Hard For The Pageviews

je.jpgWelcome to All Up In MySpace, Idolator’s occasional look at artists that are tearing up the “unsigned artists” chart on buggy social-networking behemoth MySpace. This week, we look at one of the few non-rock bands in the chart’s top 20: Detroit-born R & B singer Jennifer Edison.

Name: Jennifer Edison.
Number of MySpace Friends: 11,249.
Influences: Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica, Musiq Soulchild.
Sounds like: Monica … if she were backed by a Casio.
Sample comment from a friend: “just keep it in the hand of the lord u will make it.”
Can she be famous … off the Internet? One thing about Edison: She’s tireless, organizing street teams and giving herself a hairstyling credit on her official site. And her husky voice is definitely much more pleasant to listen to than the normal whiny-kid MySpace fare, even if it slips off pitch here and there. But her anemic beats–which, admittedly, aren’t helped much by MySpace’s less-than-ideal-acoustics–do the odd trick of overshadowing her solid pipes. Ditching her current production team might help her out, but it’s unlikely–according to her Web site, it’s made up of her father and her brother.

Where have I heard that name before? I am too decrepit to bother with myspace, so I can’t figure out where.
