Great line about Westerberg from the comments on the Minneapolis City Pages site (with apologies to the non-college-hoops-obsessed): “That goofy bastard, perhaps this is his chance to work on playing left handed. Greg Oden’s game was [already] super elevated when he hurt his wrist this fall, and now look at him!” Personally, I hope Westerberg uses the time off to rediscover a sarcastic funny bone and a way to channel his original substance-fueled brilliance (without the substances, of course) … a tall order, but I’d hope that he’s up to the challenge.
As for Ms. Buffalo Wings, I saw the footage of her actual performance at the Kennedy Center a few weeks back. It wasn’t a “first take” but the actual awards event. The mid-song breakdown was sincere and heartfelt and clearly a product of the moment (singing to and in front of a musical inspiration and idol). Of course, honesty and emotion and raw edges are not permitted in Washington DC or in a carefully-packaged, two-months-after-the-fact television special. To learn that there was a “second take” (i.e. playing to an empty Kennedy Center or in front of a green-screen) is just sour icing on the cake of disgust.
