Videodrone: Harnessing The UK’s Heavy Metal Thunder

This fascinating 1981 documentary on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal not only has some great Iron Maiden performance footage, but thanks to an interview with a metal DJ, it reveals the earliest links between Judy Garland and Eddie. (Found at MetaFilter, where users have gone a little nuts posting YouTube clips of other bands from that era, like Girlschool and Tygers Of Pan Tang.)

I think special mention needs to be moved from the Metafilter page to here.

The singer has funny man-tits, but dammit he has pipes. That song is pure fun.

Let me make you an offer you can’t REFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE!

Oh yeah, early Maiden footage rocks. I can listen to Paul D’Ianno ramble on forever. However there will always be a soft spot in my heart for the lovable insanity of Nicko McBrain (also ex-Trust drummer and roadie for Maiden who used to wear the Eddie mask and run around on stage). He may not be as good a drummer as Clive Burr, but he sure is entertaining as all hell. He really mastered the art of YELLING at his drums while playing, a fine European tradition!

not my thing at all, but for those idolator readers who do care, there’s also a feature on the NWOBHM in the latest issue of mojo, with ian curtis on the cover.

If I didnt know better I would think that was Udo Dirkschneider singing that track, sure looks like him…listening to that stuff now it is hard to believe how scary it seemed back then…dangerous and taboo…
