Stuck On Repeat: Don Ho’s Daughter Gets To The Root Of Her Boy Problem
We’ve had some digital form of “Another Dumb Blonde,” the first single by Don Ho offspring Hoku, on our hard drives since the days when we used dialup to root around Napster (ah, the low-bandwidth era); POPtastic! posted the MP3 over the weekend, and damned if it hasn’t crept back into our MP3 playlist. It’s a teasing slice of kiss-off pop, and its smart-chick spirit isn’t even marred by the vocoder drops that plagued so much of Billboard’s Hot 100 during the post-”Believe” era.

Dude! I love the Hoku too! I thought I was the only one…now I don’t feel so lonely.
With a name like Hoku, she has to be good! Seriously. I can hear Moe Sizlack yelling “CALL FOR HOKU HO. IS THERE A HOKU HO IN THE HOUSE?”
This is great in no small part because Hoku DOES NOT OVERSING. Not until the last minute or so, at least, and even then she doesn’t get too crazy with the melisma. I love it. Camera Obscura could cover it.
Hoku was the coolest thing ever to me. Though that cool definintion applies to when I was in the sixth grade. I totally saw her and Vitamin C in concert. And I think I got Hoku’s autograph. I do remember getting C’s.
Apropos of chaircrusher, I feel sorry for any woman who has to suffer the surname ‘Ho’ in this age of bling. In fact, the only person for whom I feel more remorse is the ‘Smallwood’ that was in my foreign-study programme.
