Pretty Ricky Is Neither Pretty, Nor A Guy Named Ricky

According to Hits, Sub Pop’s dreams of having the Shins’ Wincing The Night Away debut at No. 1 on next week’s Billboard chart have been dashed by Pretty Ricky, a sex-obsessed Miami foursome that’s been entrenched in the 106 & Park top ten for a while; their latest album, Late Night Special, is on pace to sell more than 100,000 copies. In case you’re behind on your midday MTV viewing, we’ve included the video for the ode to phone sex “On The Hotline” above; here are a few other facts about the group:

- In an apparent nod to the many types of condoms out there, Pretty Ricky’s members are known as Slick’Em, Baby Blue, Spectacular, and Pleasure.
- Each Rickster has very well-defined abs.
- Late Night Special‘s best, yet absolute worst, come-on: “Let me do you after school like some homework.”
- The runner-up: “I’m in my room, nothin’ but a towel on / Take them granny panties off, put a thong on”
- The group apparently counts My Chemical Romance among its sartorial influences.
- They really, really like doin’ it, and talking about doin’ it–so much that they bite the hook for Salt N’ Pepa’s “Let’s Talk About Sex” in their current single. There’s one catch, though: the word “sex” is bleeped out by BET’s censors.

The Billboard charts have become a battle between the dorky, white art-nerds and the cool, oversexed black kids.

Just like when I was in high school.

“Let me do you after school like some homework”: cribbed from Prince, unsurprisingly.

This song has “mickeyprecious” written all over it.

Holy crap, i can’t believe this is serious! I demand to know who’s the white executive behind this atrocity?! Didn’t you learn anything with the 80′s!? This is the kind of things that’s going to become an argument for all the “80′s music isn’t bad, if you listen to nowadays music in 10 years it will also sound stupid” crowd.

To be fair, doesn’t Ciara’s current single “Promise” have references to doing “homework” and “extra credit”? She’s a lot subtler than PR, but I’m pretty sure the references are in the same ballpark.

Oh yes, it’s a real treat! I would love to have been a fly on the blue screen during this video shoot. Right in the beginning, each member gets a few close-in frames with their “Pretty Ricky” name listed below. The dialogue must have been like:

“Yo Slick ‘Em, tip your hat, and show us the grills. Yeah, you the Paul Wall of this bitch! Do yah thing brah!”

“And Pleasure, why don’t you be all coy and shit – licking your lips like you love the taste and putting your chin down as you come in to tongue that thing. You know what I mean!”

And WTF with that “American Psycho” cell phone in Baby Blue’s impassioned rap monologue?

The Zack Morris cell phone is by far my favorite part of this video.
