Listening Station: The Stooges Once Again Combine “No” And “Fun”

It didn’t take long for the new Stooges song, “Idea Of Fun,” to course through the blogosphere, much the same way that protein shakes course through Iggy Pop’s gangly, spidery innards. It’s the first song from the group in 275 years, and boy, do they sound pissed:

  1. The Asheton boys are in top form, but Papa Iggy sounds a little haggard. Still–CAN’T FRIGGIN’ WAIT!!!

(Oh and Idolator: they recorded an awesome track “You Better Run” last year on the Junior Kimbrough tribute as The Stooges.)

God bless you Idolator and your wonderful work! Going to give a listen now!

  3. noamjamski  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

    Sounds bizarrely like Sonic Youth!

  4. On the Spot  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

Sounds like an 80-year-old singing excerpts from his high school journal. In front of a Judas Priest cover band.

    Better to keep our memories.

  5. “Better to keep our memories.”???

That’s garbage Spot–the best rock show I ever saw was Iggy at Coney Island High in 1995, when he was a young ‘un of only 50!

And Judas Priest? I heard no wank. Get your musical comparisons straight jack!

  6. brasstax  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

Well to be fair, the best Judas Priest songs contain no wank.

    But yeah, this is toight!!!

  7. dippinkind  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

yeah, this doesn’t sound much like the stooges but i haven’t seen anyone pinpoint the main reason yet. iggy’s lyrics sound like he made them up on the spot using the first rhymes that popped into his head? nothing new there. and the guitar’s not sounding so bad, without the mp3 compression it could theoretically sound pretty close to the old days… the fatal flaw lies in the rhythm section. what happened to the shake appeal stooges? that was always the secret key

Not to be all nerd patrol, but there were several Stooges reunion tracks on the 2003 album Skull Ring. They sounded much like this: Pretty good. But something’s missing, right?

  9. King of Pants  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

It went in one ear and out the other. Hmm. That ain’t no good.

  10. Moonshine Mike  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2007

It’s not as strong as the stooges of old, but it is tight and kicks. And not link sonic youth, unless they have mutated into a straight ahead rock band in the last few years since washing machine.

Iggy is still the only rocker with the face of a ninety year old and the torso of a twenty year old. Well, at least the torso of a well-nourished twenty year old.
