The Vault: Today’s Monday, So Neutral Milk Hotel Will Love You Tomorrow

nmh.jpgOver the weekend, we found the Yo Yo A Go Go compilation in a local bargain bin; it’s a double-disc set of performances from the 1994 Yoyo A Go Go Festival in Olympia, Wash., and it has live tracks from the likes of Beck, the Halo Benders, Heavens To Betsy, and Versus. (Not bad for $3.99.) The real find on the comp, though, is “Love You On A Tues.,” a little rave-up from Neutral Milk Hotel that sounds like a direct ancestor of On Avery Island‘s “Song Against Sex”:

This song started out, I discovered much later, as “Tuesday Moon.” It appeared on the import reissue of the “Everything Is” single (and earlier, the Invent Yourself A Shortcake cs). Seems to have been dropped once the band really gelled. Which reminds me: anyone know what the lineup was for this show? The classic NMH lineup didn’t start playing out until 1996.

Also great on this CD: Some Velvet Sidewalk’s “Apple,” with some of the best crowd call-and-response ever. Seriously, it sounds like they’re rocking a huge stadium rather than the Capitol Theater.
