So much for viewers not noticing the staff cuts at MTV2: Over the weekend, the alt-video blog altmusictv reported that the channel has decided to get rid of VJs for its few remaining music-video blocks:
altmusictv has learned MTV2 is abandoning the concept of VJ-hosted shows, opting instead for a straight-up video block format.
Subterranean, Headbangers Ball, Sucker Free, and all surviving music shows on the network will drop their hosts, voiceovers, and guests.
It seems that this change has taken effect already; not only has the Subterranean staff launched a blog, last night’s episode, which was supposed to feature footage from the PLUG Awards, was a host-free affair full of clips from PLUG-winning artists. Which is probably for the best, because that ill-fated “David Cross harasses a liveblogger” sketch should really hit the dustbin of history as quickly as possible.

I know it stinks for the people who are now out of work, but…
…from a viewer’s perspective, is this really a bad thing?
I dunno… the Subterranean guy was somewhat knowledgable, and carried that “excited fanboy” vibe that is missing in modern music criticism.
At the same time… I don’t even know the guy’s name.
That Subt host was seriously one of the worst interviewers ever. I’m sorry he lost his job, but he never should have hosted that show in the first place. It was like those old Chris Farley talk-show skits on SNL, only not funny.
Just please, please, PLEASE tell me that they also fired all the talking heads from VH1 Classic.
