Track Marks: How The Robert Smith/Ashlee Simpson Team-Up Became This Week’s Biggest Rumor In The World

April 2nd, 2007 // 7 Comments

mrsmith.jpgWelcome to another edition of Track Marks, in which your Idolators perform an autopsy on the latest band burning up the MP3-blogger charts. Today, however, we’ll take a look at one of the week’s most blogged-about rumors:

Artists: Robert Smith, Ashlee Simpson
Project: A rumored collaboration on Simpson’s upcoming album.
First mention: A March 22, 2007 story on Entertainment Weekly‘s website.
The Build-Up: For whatever reason, NME randomly picked it up this morning–a full week after EW ran it.
The Dam-Break: A few hours later, ripple reports appeared on Stereogum and Pitchfork, the latter of which called the news “perplexing at best, disheartening at worst.” And, of course, it’s now on every other blog in the world. Unfortunately, none of them picked up on the fact that even EW‘s Cure-Simpson news-break is merely “reportedly” happening. In summary: No one knows what the hell is going on–or if anything is going on at all.

Is Ashlee sure its really Robert smith she’s working with and not just some depressed, overweight 50-year English woman with too much make-up and overly hair-sprayed bed head?

    Where’s the shock? They’re both self-absorbed fuckwits.

Back in the early days of Napster, I used to troll for bootlegs of oddball covers. Once, when I came upon a file named “Radiohead-StairwayToHeaven.mp3″, I figured I had found the holy grail. I had, of course, been suckered by fraudulent nomenclature. Now it seems that, once again, my hopes will be cruelly lofted and dashed.

Dare I hold out hope? Is there a God?

@StevenPatrickMorrissey: I am sorry, I think you mean to say ‘the quite wonderful and involving self-titled record.’ You’re welcome.

no i meant what i said. i’m a huge cure fan with “pornography” being the first record i ever got. the last record is the first cure record i’ve ever been wholly disappointed in.

I’ve been talking about this for over two months, but whatever.

And it’s made the front page of Yahoo… along with a Pete Wentz quote.
