Bright Eyes’ “Susan Miller Rag”–a B-side from their forthcoming album, Cassadaga–has been zipping around the web the last few days. The song’s got a little bit of folkie-era T. Rex to it (just a little, we swear), and we like it better than many of the songs on the actual album:

Okay that photo has made me roffle harder than many things in a long while.
I have defended Bright Eyes a lot, because so much of the criticism of him (them, whatever) is knee-jerk and by people who have never even bothered to listen to his music (see above)
But the new album is pretty middle-of-the-road and sounds almost adult-contemporary. The only track that really stands out for me is “soul singer in a session band.” This song here is nothing special, either. Hopefully this is a transitional album, and the next one will be really good.
He looks like Jackson Browne during the “For Everyman” days. And that’s creepy. But I love Jackson Browne.
