Tony Bennett Realizes He Can’t Follow In Sanjaya’s Footsteps, Pulls Out Of Tonight’s “Idol”

According to reports, Tony Bennett has “a cold,” so he won’t be performing on tonight’s American Idol. Taking his place is Canadian singer Michael Buble. We’re expecting Buble to preface his performance with a confession that he, too, sent 1,542 text messages supporting the Idol-watching populace’s favorite Paula Abdul-dipper–after all, they have similar sartorial tastes.

Tony Bennett has a cold. Gay Talese is on the scene!

If we’re lucky, when Sanjaya’s moment has passed we will read about him in Esquire.

Love the reference to the Talese article “Frank Sinatra has a Cold,” which is a truly great profile. Hey, I thought Sanjaya’s performance was quite good. He’s fine when he sticks to light pop like that. I hope he wins just to piss off the haters.

If Sanjaya loses, he’ll still be on the cover of Village Voice in two months. Guarantee it.
