Out Of The Woods is the first solo album by Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn since 1982, and it’s quickly shaping up to be one of our favorite albums of the year so far–it’s simultaneously world-weary and beat-heavy, and the opening song sounds like it was plucked from Margo Guryan’s whispery oeuvre. One of Woods‘ standout tracks is Thorn’s cover of Arthur Russell’s “Get Around To It”; her take has a luminous synth and some saxophone from the Rapture’s Gabe Andruzzi:

I’m with ya, Idolators. Another top performance from TT. Some of the production was rubbing me wrong for the first few listens, but Tracey just shines thru. She’s just so good.
Definitely one of the year’s best releases thus far. Though my fave track is “Grand Canyon.” And the gay-youth anthem “A-Z” would make Jimmy Somerville proud.
The more I listen to it, the more I keep wanting to put Spray’s “Living in Neon” on, which makes me want to put Tracey back on…. it’s a vicious cycle.
Sheer quality is what describes this album. This album and Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager are in the running for album of the year….so far.
