Videodrone: Grumpy Old Music Critics Get An 8.2

April 9th, 2007 // 9 Comments

In this two-part “Breakfast At Sulimay’s” short-film series, a group of older Philadelphia gentlemen review the latest albums from the likes of the Decemberists, Clipse and Joanna Newsom. And while we’re pretty sure that the Pitchfork-bashing line in part one was planted, the rest of the cranky reactions seem to be genuine–and pretty spot-on, too, especially when it comes to their discussion about the subtleties of the Thermals:

I never realized just how much I have in common with gruff Philly oldsters.

  2. GiantPanda

yeah, fuck that rap shit… spot on… yeah… woo..

  3. Ascender

Oh god yes, they’re analysis of Joanna Newsome is spot on. It’s nice, until she opens her fucking mouth.

  4. Kate Richardson

I like how the dude on the left couldn’t play the too much obscenity card (preferred tactic for most senior citizens)to criticize Ghostface because he himself cursed like a sailor.

This is cute and all, but it gets, uh, old pretty quick. Of course cranky old men are going to hate hip hop and Joanna Newsom’s godawful voice and any male singer who sings at a higher pitch than the Boss.

I get that this is how most people react to Pitchforkian music, but then, where’s the entertainment value? This couldn’t be more predictable if you threw in rants about Starbucks and how “stupid” is now “learning disabled”.

  6. GiantPanda

So true… “so a tall is a… SMALL?!?!! ha, ha, this place is craaaaazy”

  7. zaky

    This is genius.

@Ascender: I think they said “it’s all okay until they open their f’in mouths”.

Give it time, maybe it will get better.
