On The Flippity-Flop: Smashing Pumpkins Turn Blue

sp.jpgWelcome to “On The Flippity-Flop,” where your Idolators spotlight unjustly ignored B-sides, bonus tracks, compilation contributions, and EP cuts. Send your suggestions to tips@idolator.com.

ARTIST: Smashing Pumpkins
SONG: “Jackie Blue”
FIRST APPEARANCE: Super Fantastic Mega Smash Hits!, 1995
WHY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN A-SIDE: Thanks to the tipster who reminded us of Super Fantastic Mega Smash Hits!, which compiled indie-rock remakes of songs from the K-Tel era. Red Red Meat, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, and Uncle Tupelo all had standout tracks, but we’re partial to the Smashing Pumpkins’ heady take on the Ozark Mountain Blue Devils’ “Jackie Blue,” if only because its closing guitar freak-out takes us back to the days before Billy Corgan shaved his head and James Iha became a fashionista:

  1. Hey, I just traded Super Fantastic Mega Smash Hits on lala.com the other day. I also have the follow up Star Power!, which is somewhat less memorable.

@MC: in fairness, it’s pretty tough to follow up on Fig Dish covering Kung Fu Fighting.

Hmm, are you guys getting these to work? I keep getting an error page. Damn you, Billy Corgan!

Not to be too much of a snarky ozarky local, but growing up in the gateway to the Ozarks makes me feel the need to correct your (not-so) grevious mistake… It was the Ozark Mountain Daredevils… let the hayseed comments begin.

404 all the way baby. Bummer.

  8. Babydangler  |   Posted on Apr 10th, 2007

I think you guys mean “Ozark Mountain Daredevils.”

  9. Xenu  |   Posted on Apr 10th, 2007

    It works! RAWK!

God bless The Smashing Pumpkins. The real Smashing Pumpkins, that is. They would be Billy, James, D’Arcy, and Jimmy. Not Billy, James, Jimmy, and Melissa. Not just Billy and Jimmy. Anything but the original four is just something else. The Dashing Pumpkins. The Smashing Butternut Squashes. (And the group that’s playing this summer? Please, Billy. Zwan by any other name…)

Wow! I haven’t heard Jackie Blue for like ten years. Thanks for the memories.

Almost makes me want to smear on some black eye makeup, throw on a Zero t-shirt and get in a heated debate over whether ‘Not Worth Asking’ is a better b-side than ‘Apathy’s Last Kiss’. (its not)
