The Vault: Can’t Knock The Paybacks
When the Detroit music scene was finally “discovered” a few years ago, the Paybacks was one of the groups most often assigned Possible Next Big Thing status, thanks in part to lead singer Wendy Case’s gargled-with-shrapnel voice. Knock Loud, the Paybacks’ fiery 2002 album, didn’t make them international stars, but it’s one of the best garage-rock records in recent memory, and you couldn’t ask for a more stirring kick-off track than “Just You Wait”:

Mick Fleetwood on the MP3 ‘Dumbing Down’ of Music
A generation of music lovers is getting ripped off. That's the feeling among audiophiles who say that MP3 compression, which has made music portable, affordable, and packable on small devices, has ruined the music. In some cases, it’s ruining your ears.
…..For me, the guitars didn’t bite enough on “Just You Wait.” It was a catchy enough song, and the singer shows promise. I’d like a little less dry mix, too. Sill, not bad.
…..As to the second, the endless “la-la-la-la” ain’t my thang. The singer was better here, though, very reminiscent of Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot. Definitely has those necessary hard rock chops! These guitar players aren’t bad at all, they just need to turn it up, both the master volume and the presence knob on those amps!
Paybacks f’in rule. The end.
oh yeah, that “black girls” song was on the v. excellent “sympathetic sounds of detroit” comp a few years back. thanks for reminding me to listen to it again.
