The Vault: The Sweetest Tabu

rumbariver2006.jpgIt took longer than it should have to find the first three volumes of Syllart’s African Pearls series at our local no-longer-a-Tower Records, but it was worth the wait anyhow, especially when it came to Congo: Rumba on the River, a double-disc collection of buoyant ’60s and ’70s gems. The highlight is “Pesa Le Tout,” credited to Tabu Ley. Also known as Tabu Ley Rochereau, the Congolese singer and bandleader began songwriting professionally at 14, was famous throughout Africa for singing lead on “Independence Cha Cha” by his early 20s, and currently occupies political office in Kinshasa. He was 22 when he cut “Pesa Le Tout” in 1962, and it’s one of the most graceful dance numbers ever waxed. Like most Congolese rumba (or soukous, as it became known), it starts with a melody-driven mid-tempo passage before flowering into a rhythmic vamp–here, with a tune to die for. Perfect, understated ending, too.
