Is Prince Stepping Off The Throne?

princesmiles.jpgThe bad news for Prince fans: There’s a report circulating that the singer is going to retire his greatest hits after a 21-date London blitz this summer. The good news for Prince fans: The aforementioned report just broke in the not-always-reliable NME:

Prince is to perform his greatest hits for the last time at a massive London residency this summer…

Speaking at a press conference in London today (May 8), Prince said he and his band had rehearsed 150 songs for the dates, the only European shows he will perform this year…

Prince also said that after the shows he was going to take time off to travel and study The Bible. He also revealed he’s been house-hunting in London, and added: “I really like Earl’s Court , but I can’t live there!”

Doesn’t quite sound like a “last time ever” affair to us, and so far, other news outlets haven’t said anything about it. Oh, NME! What craziness will you spout next? Before you know it, you’ll be claiming that Kings Of Leon are a top-selling act over there, and that the Proclaimers’ “500 Miles” is making a comeback!

UPDATE: False alarm.

hear-honest-cross-my-heart-and-hope-to die” with this guy? Or was that David Bowie? Or Frank Sinatra?

He’s going to ’study the Bible’? That’s obviously some sort of crazy artist-formerly-known-as metaphor for something.

This story reeks of a Kiss “Farewell Tour”. This will be the “last time ever” for his hits until he realizes that nobody really wants to hear his new stuff. This way he can make a big deal about a “comeback” a few years down the road.

NME has reported Prince ‘retiring’ his songs about every 3-4 years since the late 80’s. It’s a stock story of theirs. Any time he tours they announce it will be his last tour.
