“Veronica Mars” Digs Through Its ’90s Powerpop Archives

cottonmather.jpgWe haven’t figured out which faded alt-rock singer Paul Rudd’s character in last night’s Veronica Mars may have been based on, but we now know that the music by his formerly famous band, My Pretty Pony, was from the Austin power-pop outfit Cotton Mather, who also had their music appear on the show back in season one. While we’re still looking for “Payday,” which made a fleeting appearance in the episode’s first half, here’s “My Before And After,” which appeared on the group’s 1997 full-length Kon-Tiki (it was the song Rudd’s character played while trying out his “solo material” before the crowd of tipsy college kids):

If you liked Cotton Mather’s stuff, check out main CM guy Robert Harrison’s new band, Future Clouds and Radar. It’s less down-the-middle Beatle-y and a bit wilder (in a technicolor sense) and endlessly inventive. (PS Robert H.: credit my PayPal account now, thank you…)
