The glow of the American Idol finale is quickly fading, but to keep the televised-talent-show idea alive, we bring you this clip of Oingo Boingo’s 1976 appearance on the Idol progenitor The Gong Show; Danny Elfman and Co. performed under the name The Mystic Nights Of The Oingo Boingo in a performance that incorporated rockets, dragons, and a comely accordionist. If only last night’s finale had a shred of this performance’s showmanship. (Also: Did Danny Elfman have fond memories of Bill Bixby’s bestowing a 10 on the group’s performance when he signed on to write the score for Hulk?)

I hardly thought it possible, but it’s even better than their appearance in “Back To School.”

Two questions:
1. Did they win?
2. Where the hell was Lambchop?
I hope Bill Bixby wast angry about that performance…you wont like him when he is angry.
