Battle Of The Network-Spawned Stars: Will Miley Top Kelly?

This week’s candidates for the top spot on the Billboard 200 are inaugural American Idol Kelly Clarkson, whose My December is currently holding the title for “Album With The Most Backstory Of The Year,” and Miley Cyrus, who has a double-album with her alternate persona, teen rock star Hannah Montana. If Miley’s new album had her and her dad, Billy Ray, duetting on “Achy Breaky Heart ’07″ we’d predict an easy win for Cyrus, but alas, it doesn’t, so the race will have an even narrower finish:

    Cyrus by a length.

Never, never, never doubt the hunger by tweens to buy shiny pieces of plastic. They like Clarkson; they love Hannah Montana more.

  2. Dan Gibson

Are they double counting the two-disc Hannah Montana? If so, then she should win by a mile.

That Montana cover just makes me think: JonBenet – upper-middle class + having a Cyrus for a parent.

And what does Clarkson have to do to win this? Shave her head and start dressing like Daisy Duke? Get drunk and marry Mike Watt in Vegas?

According to http://www.hitsdailydouble.com, Hannah is leading Kelly by about 75,000 with just over half the markets reporting.

    Hannah: 247,585
    Kelly: 173,023

Here’s what might be a hint as to the answer…

Both popstars recently performed in the plaza for Good Morning America, and a GMA stagehand is reputed to have commented: “Just last week it was 7,000 [people] for Miley Cyrus, and today it’s 75 for Kelly Clarkson.”

Oh my, the Hannah disc will do very well, but probably not as well as the upcoming High School Musical 2 soundtrack. Tweens love Miley about 8 million times more than Kelly. They *like* Kelly, but they *love* Miley.

Final tally: Hannah 320K, Kelly 300K. For Kelly fans, that’s actually not bad considering how massive HM is right now.

Still, it’s a little galling that they didn’t drop the Clarkson disc the week before – 300K on last week’s chart would have accomplished two happy things: giving Kelly her first #1, and preventing Bon “BJ” Jovi from doing the same.

Got the press release a couple hours ago from Disney, which included this little tidbit:

Miley Cyrus is youngest ever recording artist with two #1 albums in less than a year.
