The things you learn from reading the music press: 1) KoRn played MTV Unplugged, which they then 2) released an album of, and it includes 3) a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” which means Thom Yorke will now refuse to play it for a good five years or so. They’re now recording a full album of covers, which already includes a Psychedelic Furs song, a Faith No More song, and because they’re comfortable being a self-parody, “Head Like a Hole.” But wait, they have a wish list:
“Prince’s ‘Erotic City,’ Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Diary of a Madman’ and Debbie Deb’s ‘Lookout Weekend’ as done by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.” Better minds than Davis have tried to get Prince to approve a cover, so that’s not going to happen, but maybe Debbie Deb would relent. With that in mind, what other songs should they cover?

“Being Boring”
If they wind up doing “Lookout Weekend” someone’s gonna get cut, I mean it.
I used to think that there was no way to ruin a Psychedelic Furs song by covering it. I think I’m about to be proved very, very wrong.
Oooohhhh…
Do you think they’ll do a somewhat ironic, cheery song? Something like “Sunshine and Lollipops” or Sheena Easton’s “Morning Train”?
Wow, that would be soooooo deep. And completly unexpected. Completly.
Also, I think the more relevant question is “Korn is still relevant?”
I think it’s asking a bit much to pretend to play other people’s songs when you can’t even play your own songs with much success.
They could probably do Mr. Bungle’s “Girls of Porn” with disturbing enthusiasm.
really, they should cover ‘girl you know it’s true.’ jonathan davis has the hair.
ERRRRGGHUUUGGHHHIIITTTWASSSSYAAAYYYYTEEEEEENNYYWEENYYYELLLLLOWPOLKAHHHDAHHTBAHKINI(wikkiwikkiwikki)
Did they already do a video with a Gary Coleman cameo? Because they need to do a video with Gary Coleman (or hell, Ron Jeremy) if they really want to maintain their unblemised record of mediocrity.
RE: Prince covers. I don’t think you can forbid someone from covering your song once it has been recorded/published. The only legal grounds for stopping a cover is if the original composition or lyrics are altered significantly. The fact that this will suck hard may give Prince enough room to halt it. But Korn could in theory record all of Purple Rain and as long as the appropriate licensing fees & royalties were paid the little dude couldn’t say boo about it.
Someone correct me if I wrong on this.
Yeah, but then you have to pay the full statutory rate, which most bands are reluctant to do since that cuts into their money. (Which is a long story that I guess you’ll just have to trust me on.) Generally when you do a cover the label negotiates with the publishing company to get a reduced rate. If Korn’s doing an entire album of covers, I assume they’d be even more reluctant to pay the full rate, because they won’t be making any publishing money from it. I knew I shoulda found that link about Prince rejecting covers before I posted this…
I actually really liked the covers of “Word Up” and “Another Brick In The Wall” from their greatest hits record a few years back, the only listenable singles they’ve released since the 90’s. If they can pull off Cameo, they can do Prince and Debbie Deb.
@maura: And the vocal talent.
Anything by Vanessa Williams, I think, would more than meet their needs.
They should totally do “Nookie.”
@tigerpop: Agreed!
They should cover “4′33″” by John Cage, “Nutopian International Anthem” by John Lennon and “There’s a Riot Goin’ On” by Sly & the Family Stone.
Can’t wait for their children’s record, followed by their Christmas record, followed by their children’s Christmas record.
I’m sure this sounds like a good idea after a few bumps of Meth. It’s not!
They should just go for it and cover all the leaked tracks from Chinese Democracy.
Or cover Alien Ant Farm’s cover of “Smooth Criminal.”
They should cover “Louie Louie”, or maybe “Double Shot Of My Baby’s Love”.

Nu-metal: Now officially the lamest genre ever.
Man, they’re down to 3 members, how soon till Korn can just end. Who honestly still listens to this stuff?
@PhantomLord: 4 members. (how the fuck did I become the resident KoRn apologist/fact checker?)
“Incense and Peppermints.”
