“Yo! Indie Rock Raps” Compilation To Be Just As Classy As Expected

yo.jpgThanks to Christopher at Paper Thin Walls for passing along the first two clips from Yo! Indie Rock Raps, the latest in a series of lighthearted attempts at minstrelsy through cover versions of the hilarious genre known as hip-hop. Not only does the compilation make the Malkin-like gaffe of calling Akon a rapper, its promo shot of Say Anything’s Max Bemis, who covers Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money,” juxtaposes a picture of him making a “funny face” with–that’s right–ODB’s mug shot. Because after all, it’s not like the PR people at Immortal Records had to use the first Google Image Search result on “Ol’ Dirty Bastard” to make their “LOL!!!?!” point. No link, because we feel weird about even giving them this much publicity, but our revulsion level hasn’t dropped in the 90 minutes since we first saw this, and it’s pretty disheartening to see that our suspicions about this compilation’s smirkiness were fairly on target.

I think you may be taking things too far. Max of Say Anything is eccentric by nature, though I agree the mug shot of ODB was a bad choice. They are both showmen, and I think Max does a fine job. It may be cheeky, but not insulting. The Maine cover of Akon was tastefully done, if anything to pay homage to him. So what if it has “rap” in the title? That just sums up the label’s mission. The artists may have veered of course with song selection. I do not see what the big deal is.
