Listening Station: Rogue Wave Venture To “Michigan”

August 13th, 2007 // 5 Comments

roguewave.jpgRogue Wave’s third album, Asleep At Heaven’s Gate, hits stores on Sept. 18, and “Lake Michigan” is the first track from it to make its way out to the Internet; it’s a pretty, chiming song that’s overflowing with harmonies and hand-claps. The file is kind of low-fidelity, but it actually adds to the song’s starry charm–so snag it now, and save it for the mix CD that’ll accompany your final, celebratory bonfire/shore trip/fire-escape sitting session of the summer:

    Ok, so they went from Sub Pop to Jack Johnson’s label. Is there some interesting backstory there, or is it just some run-of-the-mill “their contract was up and they split” story?

    Idolator, these are the sorts of questions I look to you to answer.

    @Catbirdseat:
    Exactly! GVSB said today that it was less than amicable…
    How so?! Dirt, please. Thanks in advance.

    don’t know the details but pretty sure they got dropped by subpop. i guess the 20-50k (wild assumption of rogue wave’s sales on my part) mark doesn’t cut it when you’re 49% major label.

    Contract was up (they had a two album deal). Brushfire deal is much better for them. They have a relationship with J.J. that precedes music making and it is a much more comfortable place to be. There is no real juice to the story. You think Sup Pop is going to just drop a band that was one of their better sellers? Give me a break. Look at some of the bands on Sub Pop that stay after their initial contracts are up. You think Rogue Wave doesn’t outsell them? The Shins and Iron & Wine will be jumping ship as soon as they fulfill their contracts. Sub Pop wanted to sign R.W. to a 3 album deal but they requested a 2 album deal to reserve flexibility. Anyway, the new album is really good. It reveals itself slowly. A pair of nice headphones will definitely come in handy.

    So I’ve gone from having tons of little text doc notes littering my screen all the time, to having tons of little notes jotted into my Google Notebook all the time.
