In a move that’s something like a pair of bank robbers retiring to open a savings and loan, LimeWire is about to go legit with an actual DRM-free music store. Coolfer quotes the company’s press release as saying that “Initially the store will be a stand-alone website, also accessible from links in the file-sharing software. Subsequent releases will enable users to browse and purchase music directly from within the LimeWire program.” No word yet on whether or not the company has fixed its atrociously problem-riddled software or whether it thinks the combined might of the IRIS and Nettwerk catalogs (just think of all those Barenaked Ladies albums!), its first two signings, can stand up to established outlets like iTunes or any number of the forthcoming, DRM-free online stores backed by major media conglomerates. Like bringing a knife to a gunfight, etc.
