Einsturzende Neubauten’s new album, which is set for release in October, was completed with the financial assistance of fans who donated money at the band’s official Web site. Along with the satisfaction of knowing that they helped create some massive noise, people who handed over cash got to play record-label honcho with the band via Webcam, even getting into arguments over ideas the band had discarded. Ah, money: It can make everyone feel entitled. [IGN]

How about that? I thought all of their fans died off in 1998.
God help me for knowing this but I think Marillion was the first band to do something like this a while back. (Not necessarily the Webcam part.)
It is too bad that there isn’t a bigger audience for them than ever, given how influential they were and they still are.
That said, their remaining fans usually tend to be in the tech sector (at least in the Northwest), and not just software developers — like, project or program managers, executives, etc. I remember seeing a sea of EN logo work-bags in the city not too long after the last time they played here. It seems EN knew who they were marketing their merch too if they were making customized handbags for tech workers. The logo just ain’t for punk rockers in the 80s anymore.
@RossWhite: This band is still quite huge with the Wire set. Like ‘em or not, they’re quite an important group.
“Silence Is Sexy” was pretty great.
