So my feelings on the Sugababes’ crisp comeback single “About You Now” have warmed a bit since first listen–although I’m pretty firm in my belief that the Dr. Luke-produced track is a straight-up homage to the old-school mashup “A Stroke Of Genie-Us”–and I’m pretty charmed by the video, which allows a young man looking for love to engage in some Super Mario Bros.-like hopping as he tries to find a place where he can actually get cell-phone coverage. (Hope whatever handset maker paid to have loving close-ups of its phone in this clip didn’t shell out too much for the product placement–sure, it’s a pretty piece of plastic, but do who needs to go jump over that many dumpsters just to take a phone call?)Sugababes – About You Now [YouTube]

do people in the US really give a shit about the Sugababes? I remember when their “Freak Like Me” single dropped and went absolutely nowhere. Mainly because it sucked.
@brainchild: I do. And, well…
go on? i was just wondering, because i know of about 15 people here in the US that know who they are. 2 of them are from the UK, and the other 13 worked with me at their US label back in ’02.
@brainchild: Well, and I’m in charge here so I get to put up Sugababes videos when I want.
But seriously, I do know at least 15 more people who aren’t from the UK who do enjoy their music. And I thought Angels With Dirty Faces never came out here…
@brainchild: Isn’t the fact that no one knows them here exactly the reason Idolator should be promoting them on this site? If you think they suck, that’s another matter. Personally, I find them kind of adorable, and this song is pretty catchy.
So with Maura and me, you’d better change your tally to 17 and counting.
18. I love them and have for years.
@maura: Honestly I don’t think the album ever did come out here. I just remember working the single. Midway through that, I left the company so I don’t what happened afterwards. Same goes for Sophie Ellis Bextor. We signed her, put out a single, and it got stuck in limbo. “Murder On The Dance Floor” was a great song, btw… need to put that on my ipod.
I would love to say 19, but I live on the other side of the Atlantic…
I’m not sure about this new era for the Sugababes. After “Easy” I was amped and expected a Goldfrappish twist in their sound, so I’m massively disappointed by the new single, it’s way too clean. At this point I prefer Girls Aloud, but I actually love them both.
I love them as well.
Everyone can calm down now; Sugababes has appeared, with a vaguely positive blurb, on the Forkcast. We can all admit we like them a little bit now that they have official Pitchfork-indie-this-is-okay-for-pop-cred.
20. (But are any of the original members still around? I don’t
recognize any of them, and they don’t maintain the look or sound of the
’01-’02 stuff that I remember, so isn’t it just Sugababes in name only?)
@SomeSound-MostlyFury: actually both them and Girls Aloud had 8.5 reviews for their respective greatest hits collections last Xmas.
@brainchild: Every time I see the name Sugababes, I think “Ooh, classic Bjork”, and then I’m really, really disappointed. Seriously, EVERY time.
I’ve LOVED them ever since Idolator started posting about them with Overload way back last fall. Keep up the Sugababes news!
@Bob Loblaw: Of the original members, only Keisha Buchanan (the girl in the short skirt) remains in the band.
