mtv-font1.jpgMTV is phasing out the use of its old-school video IDs–those bottom-left-corner chyrons that brought up the artist, title, album, label, and director in Kabel Black–for “a more modern design placed in the full body of the screen [where the] label and director credit are only shown during the closing title.” [videos.antville.org]

Syria says suicide bombers kill 28 in Aleppo
ALEPPO, Syria (AP) – Two suicide car bombers struck Syrian security compounds in Aleppo on Friday, killing 28 people, Syrian officials said, bringing significant violence for the first time to a major city that has largely stood by President Bashar Assad in the 11-month-old uprising against his ...
Conservative activists are revved up but lukewarm on Romney
WASHINGTON -- Conservatives are fired up, convinced that this will be a big year, but they worry that Mitt Romney will make their task harder. The foot soldiers of the American political right have been meeting in Washington this week, and stickers and signs touting the former Massachusetts governor ...

Ugh, like the awful screen-filling bars on MTV2?

  2. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2007

    Yeah. I haven’t seen yet — I’ll do a screengrab when I do.

Also, can I just say that this post has resulted in this song being unable to get out of my head?

Oh I love you Maura for that headline.

*internal jukebox plays loop of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’*

This is trés sad, but I’m kinda surprised it didn’t happen sooner.

Ever notice when MTV Classic plays an old video, the font looks as aged as the rest of the video? I have a feeling they burned those credit chyrons permanently onto their library copies of the videos back in the day, before technology made it possible to display them on the fly.

Is this where we get to make another snarky comment about the lack of videos on this… what you call… Music Television?

I miss the credits on Classic MTV/ VH1 that showed the year.

@dennisobell: i think this is true. back in the 90’s, MTV europe had these really invasive Title bars that would pop up along the bottom. Now, when, say, ‘120 Minutes’ play a video that they never thought they’d use again ( like “Feed me with Your Kiss” by MBV or Swerverdriver’s “Son Of Mutstang Ford”), the only video copy they have is the shitbox 90’s one. so up those title bars pop.

and i’m immediately transported back to 1993, and i’m wearing Doc Martens and a Stripy Breton Shirt, with that weird centre parted teenager hair, and i’m failing english “A” Level again and i WAKE UP SCREAMING…

Seeing as how there isn’t any actual M on MTV, it’s unclear to me how this change will make any difference at all.

  9. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2007

@PerpetualCarouse: Well, my TiVo picks up the 4 a.m. video blocks now and then…

Wait till you touch the braille credits on their festive Helen Keller Weekend.

  11. drjayphd  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2007

@dennisobell: And yet, the old credits somehow look even better than the VH1 Classic ones. Which are, it should be noted, better than the asstastic MuchMusic titles.

(Why do I know this again?)

  12. Anonymous  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2007

@drjayphd: Throughout Much’s history, there’s always been examples of someone being asleep at the wheel with the titles. The most glaring examples occured during episodes of Much West/East/Going Coastal, with spelling mistakes and factual errors. And that shit wasn’t even live, like most of their programming back then! Fuckers.

  13. You made a few fine points there. I did a search on the subject and found the majority of persons will agree with your blog.
