Hey, Guess Who’s Playing The Super Bowl Halftime Show This Year

budbowl.jpgAfter Prince, it’s something of a…step down:

SPORTSbyBROOKS (”SbB”) has learned exclusively today that the National Football League is in final negotiations to sign the Eagles to perform at halftime of the 2008 Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

An announcment was not imminent, but a source said the likelihood of a deal being struck between the band and the league was “90%”.

The NFL’s initial choice as headline halftime performer was Garth Brooks, but negotiations with the country performer broke down.

Of course, this is an “exclusive” scoop which quotes itself as its primary source in its own headline, but it does go on to say that “SbB was also first to report that Prince would perform as the 2007 Super Bowl halftime performer.” So, yeah, we’ll probably have to suffer through (goddamn it) the Eagles or switch over to the (probable) Law and Order marathon. I’m not sure if there’s enough Bud or Bud Light in the world for this.

On a dark desert oh never mind I just threw up

Looks like it’ll be the “Puppy Bowl” for yours truly.

  3. Anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

Well, maybe they mean the team. I bet McNabb can throw down some rhymes, and it’s not like they’ll be playing football in the Super Bowl.

  4. SilentSid  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

This is better than the other rumor I heard… Bim Skala Bim reunion.

  5. skyco  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

Whatever. Like CKJT said above, while the NFL is out riding fences, I’ll be enjoying PB IV.

  6. Anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

Once again, my suggestion of a Bongwater reunion goes unheeded.

  7. Well, looks like the Eagles will finally get to the Super Bowl. Oh, wait, you tell me it’s not those Eagles? Not surprising.

  8. ragandboneshop  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

This doesn’t surprise me. Aren’t the Eagles a LOT more popular than Prince (now and in the past)?

  9. Anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

As much as I don’t mind the Eagles (especially after the craptacular show from Prince last year)…come on guys?. You had to pick between the Eagles and Garth Brooks? What’s the matter, is the halftime show on past the cast of High School Musical’s bedtime?

  10. Audif Jackson Winters III  |   Posted on Oct 10th, 2007

Oh Jesus, Chris Berman is going to have a field day with various spins on “standing on a corner/in Winslow, Arizona”.

As the lone Eagles defender ’round these parts, I’m excited. I totally cranked “Hotel California” in the car the other day and made a comment to my companion about its tight bass playing.

I also don’t like the Big Lebowski.

    So yeah.

@sjc: The Dude does not abide.

  13. Jay-C  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

@SilentSid: Actually, I’d rather see Bim Skala Bim than watch a crowd of people pretend they’re enjoying “Live In The Fast Lane”

  14. Jay-C  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

I mean “Life,” but the song sucks no matter what you call it..

  15. KurticusMaximus  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

    Well that blows.

  16. gorillavsmarykate  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

I bet they change the lyrics from “Winslow, Arizona” to “Glendale, Arizona.”

  17. Zach Isso  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

Hmm…the NFL snubs the best liberal country artist of a generation for one of the shittiest bands ever, kudos, this is why watch Babe instead of the Super Bown.

  18. Lucas Jensen  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

@VivaLaMainstream: Prince’s show was craptacular? What?

  19. scarletvirtue  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: I second that. Besides, The Puppy Bowl is more fun to watch!

  20. gritsnyc  |   Posted on Oct 11th, 2007

GAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Why, for the love of all that’s holy, would they pick the freakin’ EAGLES over all the other stupidly reunioned bands of the 70s?

Okay, yes, I know. Mass appeal. But Prince last year was magical. They know they can do SO MUCH BETTER.

Oh NFL. One day you’re pure love; the next you’re just abusive. And yet, I continue to be faithful. Hrumph.

    Obligatory Lebowski reference goes here.

Got an email today from Tom Petty’s web site today. All it says is

“Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers XLII232008 very special announcement: 12022007″

Since Tom and the heartbreakers can’t actually participate in the game I’m assuming they will take part in the half time show…HOPING they’ll play the half time show.

I would MUCH rather watch Petty than the boring ass Eagles. I don’t mind their music but not exactly “half time show” to me.
