The Spice Girls Write Their Own “Headlines”

spiceeeey.jpgARTIST: The Spice Girls
SONG: “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)”
WEB DEBUT: Oct. 23, 2007

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: A picked-guitar ballad that will probably have a lot of old-school Spice fans scrambling for their “Viva Forever” MP3s, “Headlines” is a curious choice for a comeback single–it’s frankly kind of bland, and it’s not hard to think that it would have maybe warranted being the sixth single from Spice or Spiceworld. Then again, it has been 10 years since the girls first burst on the scene, and the laid-back pace of “Headlines” surely reflects that. One highlight: Mel C’s verses–her brassy voice is brimming with confidence, and it’s pretty obvious why, out of the five Spices, she had the most successful solo career. (Glad to see she’s recovered from that “I Want Candy” debacle.)
WHERE TO FIND IT: The always-reliable Kevipod Music has an MP3–for now–but if those links have been yanked, it’s streaming on YouTube.

Please say this is true! The dynamic girl-power band is reportedly going to be performing for the royals at the Queen's Jubilee this June. It looks like the Queen Elizabeth herself wants to spice up her Jubilee — and what better way to do that than with ...

I’m a fan of Mel. C’s voice and liked “I Turn to You,” but do we have numerical proof that she had the most successful post-Spice career? I don’t recall her albums doing any business, whereas Emma’s Free Me was a modest hit in Europe, wasn’t it?

In England it went pretty much:
Geri H – first album did pretty well, 2nd album did okay, 3rd album died on it’s arse – bye bye record contract
Scary – first single went to number one, album died on it’s arse – bye bey record contract
Emma B – Had a couple of hits, faded away, had a couple more, faded away. Probably still has a record deal
Sporty – first album sold truckloads, easily biggest selling solo spice record, 2nd album more ’selective’, 3rd album self released. Again, probably still has a deal.
Posh – first album, well, it came out. Then she went off to America with Damon Dash for ages to make an R&B record or something, but it never came out. Again, bye bye record deal. But then, she seems to have done alright..
