Britney Spears’ VMA Performance: What Might Have Been

It’s been two months since the Video Music Awards, although the post-traumatic stress from that night is still raging around my consciousness, which is why I watched the above video–featuring the original choreography for Britney Spears’ performance of “Gimme More”–with a little bit of fear. Would I be brought back to that tornado of jagged edits, drunkenness, and bad one-liners through the power of a leaked clip?

Well… no. While the video does shed some light on the “hotness” of the dance as it was intended (complete with crotch-grab at 1:38, which I guess I missed during the first go-round, and the second, and the Zapruder-film thing, or maybe she missed it–the split-screen version really doesn’t help much), really, the whole thing just seems, as Jess astutely called at 9:01 p.m. on that fateful night, like a slightly updated version of Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted” video, only without the scaffolding, and with less of the “tastefully hot” thing going on (cf. crotch grab):

Come to think of it, the two songs kind of sound alike, don’t they?

    And her album cover looks like something Paula would have put out in the early 90s! Maybe Britney aspires to Paula’s level of foggy obliviousness.

    @Nicolars: Don’t we all?
