@ninety_nine: Hey 99, I'm with you. I occassionally get free CDs because I work in the business, but I mostly buy old honky tonk records at the store down the street, and then I buy my new music from eMusic or CD Baby (CD Baby were one of the first distributors in the digital age to support independent artists, lest we forget!) or live shows (for which I still pay cover, even if it's a client). I find anything with gross corporate over-advertising, no matter how positive the initial intentions, will eventually suck hard. (Remember when Friendster was still new and Myspace was underground?). As a side note, I hope live shows become as vital as they used to be, because I believe it's not only a much better way to judge a band's sincerity, but you know the cash you spend on merch and cover has an exponentially better chance of staying in the musician's hands.

Aren't torrent music collectors just another version of WoW players? They couldn't, and wouldn't drive 7 millions copies of Britney anyway.

As someone who is completely happy to pay for music, could you do my apparently narrow demo a favor and slip in with regularity the reason that at least some people aren't buying music because it's so fucking hard to buy? My amp is 19 years old (and it only plays music once in a blue moon), so a 128-bit MP3 does me just fine. Having been burned by Yahoo music (I gave up trying to re-register all my .wmv files) and finding ITunes 1.0 cumbersome and annoying (having ripped all my CDs by then), I've swore off proprietary formats.

I know y'all are catering to a more interested fan than myself, but the issue of the day is still predominantly that you cannot find the same range of labels and acts at the same range of retailers on the web that you could in RL. There is no Tower on the web. And so I read about cool bands. If they turn up on eMusic, fine, but that was frustrating enough that I've even given up that amount of effort.

Sure, I used to go to Underground Records (obvs, I know, but it was Ohio) in my hometown religiously, hoping to find a new REM boot. But those days are gone. I'm a middle-aged man who finds the clerks at Urethra on A to be annoying like dicks. Write about an interesting band, and give me a link to a place I can give the band money and get my download, and I'm done. Wrap it up in Jobs monolpolist bullshit, well fuck you. I'll listen to a 22-year-old Replacements album instead.
