No. 37: Lloyd Skips Across The Dance-Pop Decades

lloyd.jpgBecause old heads and youngsters alike were just waiting for the worlds of TRL and Club MTV to finally come together.

So I spent the summer and the fall walking around with the twinkly glide of “Get It Shawty” on my iPod, driving myself batshit trying to figure out the provenance of the hook until (taking pity on me) Maura finally said: “It’s Technotronic, stupid.” Oh. Right. So it’s “Pump Up The Jam” all smoothed out, but with a crunchy mid-tempo rhythm track that’s more hips than house and wicked layered vocal harmonies drifting through the back of the mix. But Lloyd, while your horny effervescence makes me wish I was also young and doing wheelies on what I assume is a bridge in the middle of a desert, your hairstylist needs a talking to.

RE: Lloyd "Get it Shawty" vs. Technotronic "Pump Up the Jam": Nick Catchdubs blended both these tracks live back in April, I was there

@Weezy F Baby: oh, i loved 'you' too. which will become apparent as this countdown goes on. shit. have i said too much?

"You" was definitely it for me. Also, a great way to sample a song because the chorus was stuck in my head for two months, easily.

  • Weezy F Baby

"You" was another great Lloyd single from the year.

"Player's Prayer" being album track/ballad of the year.

  • Dan Gibson

FYI: Nick Catchdubs blended the Lloyd and Technotronic tracks, to my great amusement, earlier this year: [www.zshare.net]

  • Maura Johnston

    @DHMBIB: You left out Feist!!!!

  • Rob Murphy

@jessdolator: Oh fabulous -- I guess that means the top ten will look something like this:

1-3) [1 song each from Arcade Fire, White Stripes, and Radiohead]

    4-6) see above

    7-9) see above

    10) Wilco

    :-p

  • Jess Harvell

if that's vague enough for everyone.

  • Jess Harvell

@DanGibson: i agree with you (it's in my personal Top 10), but you can chalk this placement up to positioning politics that will become apparent by the end of the list.

  • Dan Gibson

This song should be way, way higher on this list.

    WAY WAY HIGHER, I SAY.

You can find the disc with it here. You can be the ultimate dork and bring it with you on your next karaoke jag!

  • Maura Johnston

@rogerniner: That's only because I haven't found a book with this song yet.

  • rogerniner

I'm waiting for someone to do karaoke with this, but no one is taking that bait.

  • Maura Johnston

I love this song without question, although I agree with Jess' comment about Lloyd's taste in hairstyles.
