  1. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I like to think of the “Hey There Delilah” nod being the Grammys’ birthday present to our very own Kate.

  2. Kate Richardson  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Thank you for pointing that out, Maura. The Grammys have always been terrible gift-givers. Remember back in the early ’90s when they kept giving out Michael Bolton nominations as party favors?

  3. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I piped in late on yesterday’s anticipatory thread…

    [idolator.com]

…to say that we should expect to see lots of Grammy love for Alison Krauss & Robert Plant. AK is the all-time winningest female artist at the Grammys, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them take the Best Pop Collab w/ Vocals nod. Also, Tony Bennett and Xtina. Wow, that category is stacked!

  4. Al Shipley  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I like the Foo Fighters album than probably any of the other AOTY nominees (or at least only a little less than Graduation) and even I’m boggling at their nomination.

I like how in the “rap/sung collaboration” category, T-Pain is the “rap” half in one song, and the “sung” half in another.

  5. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Also, still can’t get at the full list, but I’m a bit surprised that Grammy has put Amy in the “Pop” category. She’s a tough fit there, as well as in the R&B categories, but still.

  6. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@GovernmentNames: Sadly, for me at least, I can see FF winning AOTY.

  7. Al Shipley  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I dunno, I kinda doubt Grohl will get the full “well, since we can’t retroactively give awards to your old band” McCartney treatment. I’d give even Herbie or Vince better odds maybe.

  8. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Haha, CNN just pronounced Feist as “feast.”

  9. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    From the linked BusinessWire piece:

This year’s Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical nominations go to: Howard Benson, Joe Chiccarelli, Mike Elizondo, Mark Ronson, and Timbaland.

    That could be brutal…

  10. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I love what they consider a “new” artist. I’m sure this happens every year, and I think I’m always bewildered by it, but still. Feist’s first album came out in 1999. Amy Winehouse’s in 2003.

  11. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    Also, Kingdom Come?!?

  12. DigitalLogic  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    @bright_wings:
The ‘new artist’ field is like that every year. Taylor Swift is the only nominee that released their first album this year.

They should really just be more honest and rename it the ‘Best Artist We Had Not Heard of Before This Year Because The Grammys Are Based On How Much Money An Artist Makes the Industry and Not Over All Creative Quality’ award. Though it might just be too verbose for them.

  13. Al Shipley  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@Underclassed: Hey, I’m just grateful that all the Best Rap Album nominees are good, popular artists. The fact that none of the nominated albums is their best, or even their second best, isn’t great, but you can’t expect too much from the Grammys in that area.

  14. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@DigitalLogic: I hinted at this yesterday. This category always includes a few eye-rollers.

If Grammy finds your excellent proposed new name too cumbersome, perhaps they could consider renaming this award “The Shelby Lynne Award For Finally Grabbing Our Attention”. Lynne famously won this award in 2001 even though she had been releasing records — and charting on the Country charts — since 1988.

  15. Al Shipley  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Well, some other award shows have a “Breakthrough _______” category, which would be a suitable and not too cumbersome way of saying “artist who just had their first hit and/or major label album.”

  16. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@bright_wings: Also, re: “Best New Artist”, Amy’s first record was not released in the U.S. until, actually, 20 November of this year. So, by Grammy’s standards, she is a “New Artist” in the U.S.

  17. walkmasterflex  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@GovernmentNames: For the rap category it always just seems like the Grammy voters just pick out the 5 most recognizable artists in rap that happened to release albums that year. If that’s the case then I’m sure 50 Cent is ready to kill himself this year.

  18. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Oh boy. Looks like RT’s gonna go back on that “brown liquor” diet.

    This sucks.

  19. Ted Striker  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    @Underclassed:

They’re just stacking the deck so that Kayne wins something. They don’t want him interupting Brad Paisley’s performance.

  20. rogerniner  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I’m intrigued by the Urban/Alternative category, and am very happy to see Alice Smith on there. “Dream” is one of my favorite songs of the year. Also, Victor Duplaix? Dwele? Somebody’s been reading Straight No Chaser.

  21. tigerpop  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

That is quite possibly the best Record of the Year field in Grammy history.

  22. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    @DHMBIB:
Well, that’s a very American attitude for them to take I suppose.

  23. Artie Fufkin  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

But seriously who’s country is this?

  24. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@tigerpop: I agree, and I feel that many of the categories are stacked top-to-bottom with quality choices. I’ve felt like 2007 overall has been a lousy year for good music, but the best-of-the-best truly has been outstanding.

My first impression on the ROTY and SOTY categories are that either a) “Umbrella” or “Rehab” will sweep both categories — I so totally called noms for both of these songs — or b) there will be a really weird combo, like “Irreplaceable” [ROTY] and “Before He Cheats” [SOTY]. But then, I called “Crazy” a kryptonite lock for ROTY last year, so what do I know?

  25. gorillavsmarykate  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Beck’s nomination for “Timebomb” must
REALLY signal the end of physical CDs. It was an iTunes-only download,
    right?

  26. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Also, Amy’s “Big Four” [AOTY, ROTY, SOTY, New Artist] nominations give me [us?] hope that Grammy will make up for one of their biggest blunders — making Christopher Cross (!!!) the only artist to sweep the Big Four on the same night [1981].

  27. The Van Buren Boys  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I’m personally suprised that The White Stripes didn’t get any more nominations. They’re usually in there for something. Essentially business as usual. The Grammys always make me ill anyway, but if Daughtry wins anything I just might lose it.

  28. whittlz  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

No Miranda Lambert is a damn crime.

  29. Anonymous  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I could totally be wrong but I don’t remember Britney Spears being nominated for Record of the Year when any of her singles hit big. Why the heck do Rihanna’s writers et al get the honor?

I honestly didn’t think the Grammys would piss me off more than they have the past couple of years but SURPRISE, they have! Maybe a bunch of indie kids need to crash the award show, bomb the place, and start the industry from scratch?

  30. rad_matter  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I’m also happy to see Alice Smith as well as Victor Duplaix nominated. Also, can’t wait until T.I. bitches about another Grammy loss on another record…if there is another record. (Then again, look at R. Kelly!)

  31. tigerpop  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@DHMBIB: “Rehab” being this year’s “Crazy,” it’ll probably get snubbed in the big categories. I’m pulling for “Irreplaceable” on all fronts, on the grounds that I will never ever get sick of that song. For Album of the Year, I’ll bet a crisp new dollar that Herbie Hancock takes it.

  32. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@DHMBIB: I should also have added that Norah Jones won AOTY, ROTY, and BNA in 2003, while “Don’t Know Why” won for SOTY. But the SOTY award goes only to the songwriter[s] [which was not Norah], not the artist, so Norah did not “sweep” these awards.

Also, the last artist to win AOTY, ROTY, and SOTY on the same nite was the Dixie Chicks last year, but before that it hadn’t been done since Eric Clapton managed the feat in 1993.

  33. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@rhythmchyc: Well, IMHO, and many others’ as well, most of Britney’s songs were total crap, and the ensuing records were too bubblegum-my for NARAS. OTOH, “Umbrella” is a terrific song that lends itself to lots of different interpretations, and it has already been covered by a number of artists across multiple genres — like “Crazy” last year. And it’s the “biggest” record of the year, too. So, I’m not surprised in the least that it got both of these noms.

  34. DaeSu  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

“Best Urban/Alternative,” better known as R&B/Rap that doesn’t suck, or music never actually heard on most urban stations.

  35. KurticusMaximus  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Fuck “Hey There Delilah,” that song came out in 2005 and it was just as boring then as it is now.

Too bad Paramore doesn’t have a shot at Best New Artist, it’d be fun to see those kids get up on stage. Then again, it could be fun to see Winehouse stumble her way through a speech.

  36. DaeSu  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I’m so cynical, I think Kanye will finally win AOTY — not because “Graduation” is a wonderful album or deserving, but because his mama tragically died. The Academy is better prepared to deal with teary, grief-stricken Kanye than smug, ego run-amok Kanye.

  37. Jfrankparnell  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Every year, as usual, the Grammys make me wonder why I care at all

  38. dentist  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical: Junior Boys- “Like a Child (Carl Craig Remix)”!!!

  39. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

    grammy.com has finally settled down a bit…

Following up on our “Best New Artist” discussion from earlier, here is Grammy’s description of the eligibility requirement:

“(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)”

Feist is/is not a “new artist”. Discuss.

  40. beta.rogan  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

I think there should be a “Best T-Pain Collaboration” category.

  41. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Only one nom for Miranda Lambert for Best Female Country Vocal Performance (”Famous In A Small Town”)

    >:(

Also, shocked to see only two noms for Alison Krauss — the nomination w/ Robert Plant in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category, and a solo nomination for “Simple Love” (Best Female Country Vocal Performance), which was a new track from her GH / collected one-offs CD, A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection.

I have no idea what this means for her chances in either category.

  45. the rich girls are weeping  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@Jfrankparnell: But! But! Fantasia! “Same Girl” vs. “Bartender.”

How is it that I only care about the “urban” and rap categories? This is what happens when you move to Bed-Stuy, I guess! Ha!

Also, this is so lame of me, but I’m kind of bummed that Interpol & the Nups aren’t nominated in the box set category.

  46. Chris N.  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Taylor Swift’s album came out last year.

  47. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

@Chris N.: October of last year, which means it falls right in the beginning of the Grammys’ October-to-September calendar year.

  48. Trackback  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Because he’s too shy (and way too busy) to announce it here himself, I am proud to do the honors: Zach Behrens has officially accepted the Editor position here at LAist and he’ll be starting on December 17th.

  49. DrSpaceman  |   Posted on Dec 7th, 2007

If Herbie Hancock wins AOTR for his Joni Mitchell album, I think that she should return the favor and do a cover of “Rockit”.

  50. Anonymous  |   Posted on Feb 10th, 2008

Kanye West is the most unprofessional self-centered person in the entire music industry. He deserves nothing due to his poor sportsmanship. If any athelete acted like him they would be history. My Mom died recently too but I don’t think I deserve special treatment. Grow up you freak!!!
