But recapping/reviewing a year's events, analyzing what happens in any given cluster of time, is as useful as knowing the landmarks within any given mile. Year-end roundups define and summarize a distinct fragment of time. For centuries, history has discussed things in terms of years, decades, centuries, all somewhat problematic but highly necessary distinctions. Why should a cultural history or time capsule(regardless of the unfortunate things are contained within it) be any different?
