@MATOS, also the audio compression thing predates, and has nothing to do with, MP3s. It's all about making your music sound louder on terrestrial FM radio.

"What, precisely, accounts for the human tendency to quantify music...during a calendar year? Unlike many folks of his acquaintance, KK lacks the compulsion to prioritize cultural artifacts along such clearly demarcated lines."

I can't speak for the top ten listmakers, but the ones who go through the trouble of making top 50 or 100+ lists, plus genres, do it for people who actually like music. You know, the ones who believe there were more than ten good albums released any given year. The idea is that there's too much good music to easily remember, and "prioritiz[ing] cultural artifacts" is a pretty good way to revisit favorites and discover new ones from other lists. If KK can come up with a better way, please share.

Get over yourself, KK. Mamas and the Papas made great pop records (and Doherty was instrumental to them), Rob Sheffield is an entertaining writer, and years/decades are units of measurement, measuring time just like yards and miles measure distance. Sure, the confines of a year are every bit as arbitrary as, say, 5280 feet constituting a mile. But recapping/reviewing a year's events, analyzing what happens in any given cluster of time, is as useful as knowing the landmarks within any given mile. Year-end roundups define and summarize a distinct fragment of time. For centuries, history has discussed things in terms of years, decades, centuries, all somewhat problematic but highly necessary distinctions. Why should a cultural history or time capsule(regardless of the unfortunate things are contained within it) be any different? That said, the "sticky Blender pages" quip is priceless!

"Creeque Alley," also good. But aside from being miffed at the Mamas and Papas comment, good article. Every now and then it's heartening to be reminded that good music writing does surface amid the bullshit PR copy of print and the petty backbiting and hipster oneupmanship of the blogosphere.

Cougar hasn't been widely used in mass market magazines? Really? You mean I'm totally sick of it exclusively cause of the internets? Somehow I'm guessing People and US Weekly beat Blender to that one like a thousand issues ago.

@sfbeary: Agreed. "California Dreamin'" is on my "Top ___ Greatest Pop Songs" list.

Jess/Maura/Keyboard, fire up your search software and look for the version of this song by...wait for it!...BARRY McGUIRE!!! Which is even more awesome than it sounds because The Mamas And The Papas provide the backing harmonies.

Not sure compression is an "underreported phenomenon"--there were a few long pieces last year about it, including Joe Gross's in the Austin American-Statesman and a Stylus piece by Nick Southall that made it into the Da Capo Best Music Writing 2007 book.

Allure magazine was there first -- she admitted to that in last month's issue.
