All that whining about the nu-metal years seems rather disingenuous to me. AP were one of the first major publications to promote and publicize those bands.

i write for AP, and this post really nails what the magazine is about and why it's successful. thanks for giving it a non-dismissive, thorough analysis.

As someone who contributed heavily to AP during their years in the nu-metal wilderness (I wrote their Disturbed and Slipknot cover stories), I'm glad to see the mag continuing, and apparently succeeding - and even more glad that I don't write for them very much anymore. As pissed as Pettigrew sounds about what they were assigning me to cover five-six years ago, I'd be even more pissed if I had to pretend to give a fuck about Paramore.

@GovernmentNames: Same here - I would eagerly get it every month in middle school and make a list of albums I wanted to hear. I honestly learned of so much music from them, obviously, not all great, but still.

Good analysis of a mag not covered in this space before. I kind of have a soft spot for AP for back in the mid-90s, when they were one of the only mags with a really big reviews section covering dozens of dozens of albums, without the tiny postal stamp wordcounts that usually accompany that approach in the bigger mags these days.

Wow, I was so worried that you actually linked to 2girls1cup and for a second thought maybe there was someone on the internet who hadn't been exposed to it yet.

I wish I had something more substantial to contribute, but I don't, so I'll just say I greatly tenjoyed this. I've definitely been too hard on AP, but back when I was that age, grunge was pretty much anti-fashion. Or at least that's how I experienced it... so all these expensive clothes and excessive preening seem to be a huge difference from my experiences, but then if I were a kid growing up now.... well, I'm really glad I'm not 15 right now, I'll just leave it at that.
