Coldplay may be the next big name to leave EMI, say reports. According to the Daily Star, an always-reliable “source close to the band” sees it as thus: “There’s so much uncertainty in the record industry right now. The boys don’t necessarily need a label anymore. They aren’t even considering putting pen to paper on any type of new contract until they see what happens.” [Daily Star via Guardian]

Wow. If this holds, Radiohead might just have in fact killed the record industry in proving to other established international acts that they don’t need a distributor anymore in a digital world. The labels rely on these tried and tested acts to protect their margins, to make up profits in places where taking chances on smaller acts fail. So the big acts help insure the smaller acts, to some extent (emphasis on “some”), and their bucking the system would cause further belt-tightening in the industry and thus less fertile ground for the development of new talent. So what becomes the alternative avenue of promotion and distrubtion for the fledgling act, with the democratization of information, such as it is online, and subsequent supersaturation of possible outlets like MySpace? I guess that’s the million-dollar question.

Coldplay owe EMI at least two, maybe three more albums, depending on their initial deal and whether or not that Coldplay Live CD/DVD counted.
