Other songs that stayed on the Modern Rock charts for over a year were Red Jumpsuit Apparatus "Face Down" and 30 Seconds To Mars "The Kill". Dear God, I never wanted to hear Red Jumpsuit again, and thank God we never played the 30 Seconds to Mars.

@Charles A. Hohman: Wow, thank you so much for that info. I didn't mention it in the column since it's been on the Mainstream chart longer, but "Paralyzer" has actually been on the Modern chart for 47 weeks now (46 as of the chart discussed in this column), so unless something has beat "In The End" since '05 it's already a record holder there. Might not break Fuel's record on Mainstream, though, since it's got 6 weeks to go and has already drifted out of the top 10.

"I don't know what the longevity records for either chart are--resident chart experts, feel free to chime in if you have an idea--but its run is certainly impressive..."

As of early 2005, the Mainstream Rock Tracks record was Fuel's "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" with 56 weeks; on Modern, it was Linkin Park's "In The End" at 44. I'm pretty sure the Modern Rock record has changed since then, but Mainstream may have stood---I haven't stayed updated in recent years.

Interestingly, from 1991-1992, Van Halen's "Top of the World" spent 51 weeks on the Mainstream Rock chart, a record that stood for nine years, all the more impressive because its run predates the conversion to BDS tracking system.

I hate Seether, and it saddens me to no end that their drummer used to be in the Nixons, one of the better mid-90s Pearl Jam-ripoff bands.

Al, dude, I feel your pain this week -- the charts are dead. I was moaning to Maura a few hours ago about what the hell I was gonna write about for my column. Anyway, nice job.

Currently descending down the lower reaches of the chart is Eddie Vedder's sleeper hit, "Hard Sun," which has done pretty well for a song off the soundtrack to a low-grossing Sean Penn movie

I'm continually amazed at how a song from even a tiny movie or TV show can score big sales and/or airplay. It's a constant reminder to me how much smaller the threshhold for a "hit" is in the music world. A million tickets or 3 million viewers are considered virtual flops in movie land and TV land, respectively; but a label exec would be overjoyed with sales like that.

Not that the Pearl Jam frontman doesn't have a long track record of success on rock radio, but a cover of obscure Canadian singer-songwriter Indio featuring Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker is certainly one of the unlikelier hits of his career.

After Pearl Jam scored the biggest Hot 100 hit of their careers with a cover of a '60s teen-tragedy pop record, nothing Vedder scores with on the charts surprises me anymore.

You kidding? "Crushcrushcrush" is the best song on Riot! It's super-duper catchy, and I'm always amused by the quick-spoken "twothreefour" before the chorus. The kids need more rock like this.

There is actually a band named Five Finger Death Punch?!? That sounds like something you would hear in poorly translated Japanese cartoons. That and the fact that Godsmack has a greatest hits album makes my head hurt.
