Annie To (Finally) Show The World Her Cards

A few months back, I was wondering what had happened to Annie, the Swedish Norwegian pop singer who made the Internet go nuts back in 2004. (Or was it 2003? Time flies when you’re being pelted with information relentlessly, I guess.) Anyway, according to Pitchfork, she has a new single coming out sometime in the near future! It’ll be produced by none other than Richard X, a.k.a. the man who produced the above track “Chewing Gum” and who also brought together Jarvis Cocker and Mazzy Star and masterminded the Sugababes’ “Freak Like Me.” This all sounds like it’ll be really good, right? But wait, it gets even better!

According to X’s “international production empire” website, Black Melody, Annie will tackle Stacey Q’s 1986 dance hit “Two of Hearts” on the A-side, while the B will boast an original tune called “Songs Remind Me of You”.

OK, this is fantastic news for many reasons. Point one: Annie’s range and that of Stacey Q are pretty much identical.

Also: Richard X grimes up electropop better than anyone else; just take a look at his production company’s YouTube page, because every song on it is gold. (His album X-Factor Volume 1 is also worth getting, although it’s kind of disheartening that there are many more used copies of it out there than there are new ones.) If only the writers’ strike wasn’t going on–then Annie could perform the track on some Facts Of Life-type sitcom!

Annie's Mailbox: Not one of them has a job
Dear Annie: My mother is 86 and lives in another state. My 33-year-old nephew and his three kids live with her, as do my niece, "Joanna," and her two children. Not one of them has a job. Several months ago, Mom broke her hip and was in rehab for ...

Hahah, nice. I was strongly considering talking about “Two of Hearts” for a presentation in LA in two weeks.

Me encanta Annie! Had to be Summer ‘05 because my ex-boyfriend put her on a CD for me back in the day.

Gah, maybe I’m getting old and crotchety, but this is such disappointing news. I’m soooooo tired of grimed-up electro covers of loveable 80’s throwaway hits. The sugarcoated, winky irony is slowly sucking all the fun out of life.

Can Europopstresses (and Richard X) PLEASE come up with a new gimmick? Pleeeeeease?

  6. i like that richard x album. seems like he’s due some attention.

I used to spank it to Suzy Q all the time. And, yeah, now I’ll be spankin’ it to Annie.

    Whoooo ahhhhh!

This song makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. One of my earliest musical memories is listening to my dad’s copy of the Two of Hearts 12″ with my sister and spastically dancing around the living room.

The Annie indie-nerd explosion was in late ‘04; the U.S. release of Anniemal was in the summer of ‘05. I know because I put “Heartbeat” on my Summer 05 mix back then.

Wow, how had I never seen that “Chewing Gum” video? Annie is awfully proud of her impressive posterior.
