Chris Brown Is Still Flogging The “New Michael Jackson” Thing For All It’s Worth

And now he’s dragging Lil Mama along with him, as evidenced by the “Scream”-biting video for “Shawty Get Loose,” the latest attempt to let the Top 40-listening masses that the pint-sized rapper has other songs besides “Lip Gloss.” Whoever had the idea that ripping off paying homage to a video that’s most well-known for its ’90s-music-biz budget-breaking aplomb–and trying to perform that tribute on what’s clearly a pretty tight budget–was the best way to reinforce the CB/MJ connection seems kinda misguided, you know? Especially given that at this point in time, calling Lil Mama the “next Janet Jackson” sounds like a way to doom her future career prospects. (At least wait until her album has a release date!) @30f: I was speaking about the video, only, actually. And the room with all the TV screens simply reminded me of the Diddy video and all its gloss. So sorry I can’t feel like this was materialistic.

Isn’t the word “shawty” a bit played out by now?

    Needs more pong

Mysertiously absent from the final cut: Shot of Lil Mama standing and peeing into a toilet.

@StuntKockSteeev: Life needs more pong, so it’s not his fault.

@extracrispy: The word “shawty” is a bit played now, but this Lil Mama album has been in the can longer than Amerie’s record. The expression was probably “straight banging” back when they put it on “wax.”

Does anyone else think Chris Brown sounds like “Weird Al” Yankovic on this song? Seriously.

    Mindless product for mindless consumers.

    Needs more flying Vs.

I think I saw a bit more of a “Mo Money Mo Problems” video influence than “Scream,” particularly because of the absolute absence of the latter’s indignation and the shiny, bright, shallow materialism of the former.

Needs more “Anti-gravity racquet ball vase target practice.”

@rhythmchyc: I will give you “shiny,” “bright” and “shallow” - but where is the “materialism” in this song? perhaps you are confusing this song with something else. Most of the lyrics seem to be about the performers professing their skill as vocalists or dancers and encouraging others to show off their own skills. I guess T-Pain does hold up his necklace at one point - but that hardly seems to make the whole clip/song “materialistic” and besides, no one pays attention to T-Pain anyway.

I really do enjoy Lil Mama, but this is troubling on quite a few levels, most of them having to do with T-Pain.
