“American Idol”: The Spoilers Continue To Spoil Some Of The Fun

I’m starting to wonder if part of my fatigue with this year’s American Idol audition episodes can be blamed on the Internet. Yes, the episodes are seeming more rote than ever, with the line between “good” and “bad” drawn with the fattest sharpie ever and no real surprises as far as who does and doesn’t go to Hollywood, but perhaps all the spoilers out there are draining some of the fun from watching the auditions. And the parts that detail the hopefuls’ IMDB bios aren’t helping much, either. TV Squad has another take on this year’s American Idol top 24: their lists of the top 12 women and the top 12 men differ slightly from the spoilers proffered by MJ’s Big Blog, and they do shed some light on the backgrounds of this year’s top contenders. Guess what? There are more reality-show rejects out there!

So far we have the Star Search winner whose backstory was all about his throat problems and the kid who was on the short-lived MTV show Cheyenne. And then there’s:

• Joanne Borgella won the first season Monique’s F.A.T. Chance, the comedienne’s plus-sized pageant that airs on Oxygen. As a result of her win, she’s been on some magazine covers and she posed for Essence.

• Then there’s Syesha Mercado, the chick who made her father show off his rehab diploma to the cameras (!!!) in an effort to show the world that her life was really hard and then sang an awful, screechy version of “Think” on Wednesday night’s episode. Mercado was actually on the short-lived ABC attempt to steal some of American Idol‘s thunder The One. The show–which has been rumored to be the most expensive show in the network’s history–was canceled four episodes in, and no winner was ever announced. Perhaps the producers think that she’s eligible for a do-over now? Hell, why not invite on the whole cast of that show for a “very special” Idol mini-season!

Given that the Miami episode basically used Julie Dubela’s background on American Juniors as a way to make fun of her (OK, she wasn’t that great either, and could probably go on to be the Ellen Feiss of the show), you’d think that Mercado’s hard-luck TV background would at least be mentioned. Or is Idol only acknowledging the pasts of people who have been on its production company’s stable of TV shows this year?
