More on the brand-new NYC rock station WRXP: To answer a commenter’s question, it’s apparently hoping to differentiate itself from its crosstown rock-radio competitor K-Rock by not having idiots like Opie & Anthony during AM drive time* and claiming that its format merges “New Music, Classic Rock, Alternative & Local Rock into a new adult blend called ‘The New York Rock Experience.” (The press release also says that the station’ll be hiring “live and local on-air talent for the station”; if any Emmis reps are reading this, I’d like to say hello.) To help listeners figure out just what they’ll be, um, experiencing as part of their New York Rock Experience, the release lists 22 artists; as Chris Molanphy said when I showed it to him, it’s “comforting comfort food” and as heavy on the dudes as you’d expect from a commercial rock station. But hey, it is Seether-free. Full list after the jump.

Emmis Launches Innovative New York City Radio Station [PR Newswire]
* OK, I’m hoping there. But… please?

I’ve heard this radio station before. It’s called KNDD-FM, Seattle circa 2002.
wow, santogold? that seems to stick out like a sore thumb, even for an “alternative” rock station.
So far the music is good, but I hope the personalities end up being entertaining, and it’s not some Jack-like jukebox with better music
actually….after looking at the mission statement I may have to give them a try. That’s if I can manage to pick up the station in my apt.
yes! if enough idolator listeners tune in maybe i can get a coveted sunday-morning slot! RADIO HERE I COME
This is exactly what 107.1 The Peak out of White Plains is playing, but they call it World Class Rock for New York’s Backyard.
@Sniffle: they should really do something about that adam duritz photo on their homepage:
[www.1071thepeak.com]
This has potentiality. In the 80s, WBCN in Boston would play what was then-groundbreaking acts like U2, Husker Du0 and REM with more classic type stuff like the Who and Neil Young and I felt that made for a more interesting listen then just one or the other.
@jordan_s:
they actually played interpol at about 6.30pm/
i kinda psyched about this station (guarded psyched…)
That list reads a lot like WFNX in Boston, if you take out the classic rock types. And Dave Matthews.
@Maura Johnston: I’ll back you up and get everyone I know to listen as long as you take me along with you. I did in fact go to college for that junk….granted it was the late 90′s and I took more advertising and journalism classes than radio but C’MON! I’ve got mad skillz.
Gee… sounds like my internet radio station @ [www.musicaljustice.com] (or iTunes Radio under alternative)… we’ve played almost all of those artists at some point, along with the best of today’s stuff… stuff like YYY, Strokes, the Smiths, Steve Earle, Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, Wilco, Elvis Costello, the White Stripes… just because you want to hear the best new music, doesn’t mean that you don’t want to hear the stuff you grew up with anymore… most stations that play the latest music turn themselves into an indie rock ghetto…
just sayin’…
wasn’t this the old WPIX in the very late 1970′s? The only non college station in NYC playing punk/new wave stuff with Jane Hamburger, Meg Griffin and Joe from Chicago? Pix penthouse Parties things like that?
@jordan_s: yeah, i heard both the strokes and interpol while i was listening.
i hope it follows in indie 103.1′s footsteps, to be honest. although i do wonder how it’ll do since there’s much less ‘drive time’ in new york city than there is in the LA metro area.
(also this sounds dorky, but i really would like to get a sunday-morning slot. cmon, i am at least as radio-worthy as religion and rock: [www.religionandrock.com] )
Been listening today. This is definitely an Oasis in the wasteland that is New York commercial radio. Have been a WFUV listener for years as the only place with any kind of rock variety. Thought a station similar to it with a bit harder rock would work. This sounds like it. Will be giving it a good try. Could use a bit more music from the jamband scene i.e. Robert Randolph, Grace Potter, etc…
WPIX was incredible in its heyday. And it influenced the other stations to the extent that WNEW and WPLJ were playing stuff like “Life During Wartime” and “Oliver’s Army.” When you’re 12 years old and the Internet is still a military communications system, that’s life-changing.
WPIX’s next format after punk inevitably tanked? “Love songs. Nothing but love songs.”
funny that for being a nyc rock station there’s no strokes, yeah yeah yeahs or interpol to be found, the three of which would fit in quite nicely
It seems like cross between some stuff that I unabashadly love, K-rock, and a less-shrill indie 103.
Their Music Director is the guy who ran 91X in San Diego for a million years.
The Program Director’s experience is with Smooth Jazz and Dance music.
So much for a true “New York Rock Experience”
@Sniffle: Wow, for a right-of-the-dial station, this is actually a pretty impressive list:

looks like the ex-krockers are already jockeying for jobs. cabbie’s of course yammering on on his web site, and ex krocker Ben Harvey wrote a somewhat vitriolic piece about k-rock’s current PD on his blog: [www.benharvey.net] this should get interesting!
I needed to write you the very small observation in order to say thanks a lot the moment again for all the striking methods you have shared on this site. It has been quite open-handed of people like you in giving unreservedly all that a lot of folks might have advertised for an electronic book in making some profit for themselves, chiefly since you could have tried it in the event you desired. The principles likewise worked to be the easy way to recognize that someone else have similar dream really like my personal own to know a whole lot more around this matter. I’m certain there are millions of more pleasurable moments up front for many who find out your site.
