Robyn Will Gladly Jack U Off

Not to be one of those douchey “I live in New York and OMG I get to go to everything” bloggers, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that last night I saw the first American show by Swedish teenpop star-turned-bloggers’ delight Robyn, and my reaction can be summed up by this IM that I got from a friend also in attendance: “Robyn: awesome or AWESOME!!! ?” The answer, of course, is “both, duh!” This surprisingly decent phonecam video of her take on Prince’s “Jack U Off”–part of her three-song encore, which also included a reworking of her 10-plus-years-old hit “Show Me Love”–is a little grainy and there’s some dude who starts jabbering away at 1:46, but it captures the frenzy that she whipped the crowd into pretty well, and I only hope that she becomes enough of a pop star that everyone reading this will someday have the chance to witness this particular spectacle in person as well. It’s great to see somebody with real talent reworking a Prince track. Every so often my mind wanders into the scary place where I hear Jordan Knight singing ‘I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man’……..and it frightens me. Kudos, Robyn, kudos!!!

@HONEYBFLY: I don’t know. I always really liked the Pansy Division version of this song….

  6. Did anyone else notice/find it odd that the only track the house DJ played that got any kind of response from the audience was The Outfield’s “Your Love”?

I was also there last night. And all my friend and I could say to each other on the subway home was “She is just too awesome.” I’m glad others were left as speechless as we were.

Also: Is it really true that was her first show in the US ever?

fyi, it’s not a phonecam – it’s the video mode of a nikon coolpix p5000. also, universal/youtube has just asked/demanded that i take this video off youtube, so get all the views you want in asap. the guy jabbering away was the soundman – you might be an “OMG i get to go to everything blogger,” but i’m a “OMG i work at highline and see it for free blogger.” i rest my case.
