The video of the 2003 fire at the Great White show at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island that killed 100 people has made its way to the Internet. Vince Neilstein thinks that anyone who “MUST WATCH THIS RIGHT NOW” in order to remember about fire safety when they go out, but I think I’m going to work up to being able to view it because I think it’ll just make me sad. I actually had to watch this whole thing a couple years back for work related purposes.

I’ve never really gotten over it, and though I still go to shows weekly, I always catch myself glancing to see if the exits are obstructed.

It’s a tough watch and it kind of sucks that it’s gone public. You’ve been warned.

  2. Wasn’t it played on CNN way back when?

    I could swear I’ve seen it before…

I was called by many a family member the day after that went down. It’s awful to say, but I was a little offended that my family thought I would go to a Great White show.

How does one “work up to being able to view” 100 people getting senselessly killed? Calisthenics? Meditation? A few viewings of the Steve Irwin death footage? A light lunch?

As a veteran of hundreds of club/metal shows - employee, performer, spectator, etc. - I find this tape to be among the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen. I can literally see “myself” in that crowd. And, like Tiger Claw, I always check the fire exits nowadays so, I guess that’s the one good thing about it.

Still, though, just thinking about it breaks my heart.

  6. @Jon Can Dance: I was woken up by a phone call from my mom at 2:00 in the morning. I was dating a Rhode Island resident at the time, so she wanted to make sure that we were still alive.

I wasn’t offended. It’s not like moms know who the hell Great White is, anyway…

…unless said moms have a faded and stretched rose tattoo.

@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: My mom gets a free pass, because she’s my mom. My aunt, who to this day still dresses like she’s in a Whitesnake video, does not.

The news station that recorded it just paid thirty million dollars in a settlement because the cameraman was actually blocking the exit for part of the time he was filming.

also, it’ll be five years in a couple of weeks. if anybody really cares, a documentary came out a while ago about Nick O’Neill, the youngest person to die in the fire.

My dad was one of the lead fire investigators on this and he let me watch the entire, unedited video. It still gives me chills to this day. Like a couple others have said, I am constantly looking for multiple exits out of any venue now.
