janettt.jpgJanet Jackson’s “Feedback” had a small uptick in sales this week, meaning that it could actually move up the Hot 100 after stalling a few weeks ago. But now comes the news that two singles are being released from her forthcoming album Discipline next–one for pop radio, one for urban radio–which could be a sign that her label really believes in the album or one that the label is hedging its bets and trying two singles at once to see which one is better. Hmm, I wonder! [Kevipod Music]

This year's Janet Jackson moment! MIA flips the bird during LIVE Super Bowl half-time show
For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show, it is likely to be a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. that is most remembered. The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of ...

I’ve been monitoring the itunes sales of ‘Feedback’ myself…while I am optimistic about the increases, I’m more excited about its increase in radio play on the RnB charts (which I suspect can be attributed, at least partially, to the recently-revealed Ciara remix).

I would caution Island/Def Jam about formally releasing the ‘Luv’ single to urban radio. Those markets will play J’s records without too much of a push. Her biggest market and audience is the pop/dance world, and a clear/concise marketing push (a la ‘Rock With U’) in that direction may help J establish a more solid presence in today’s top-40 market.

    Just sayin….

I wonder if people will be pissed when they find out the Ciara remix isn’t an official “Feedback”
    remix.

I’m more optimistic about “Rock With U” than “Feedback” right now–”Rock With U” sounds like it can be played at any club that plays a lot of house music. Also: no creepy lyrics comparing Jan to a heavy first-day period.

While the Ciara mix is an unofficial, I recall hearing the ghastly Gimme More/Bring Em Out “remix” (clearly a product of a tweenage youtube user with too much time on his or her hands) on heavy rotation on KIIS FM here in Los Angeles.

So I suppose anything is possible?? Plus the ‘Feedback’ Mix is actually sort of fun, so it’s (hopefully) sending some positive vibes towards the release of DISCIPLINE. In fact, I’ve almost completely forgotten about ‘Show Me’ or ‘This Body’…

As bad as things are generally for Janet these days, she’s had an album rescued by a second single before.

Back in ‘97 The Velvet Rope was starting to ebb because of the weak radio performance of “Got ’til It’s Gone” (still one of my favorite of her singles); Virgin didn’t even release it as a U.S. single (the prevailing trend at the time), in hopes they could move lots of albums, but it wasn’t a strong enough hit to pull that off. So in winter ‘98, they dropped “Together Again,” complete with a single release, and it became her umpteenth No. 1 hit and revived the album.
