The latest rumor around My Bloody Valentine’s upcoming onstage reunion hints that the drummer’s stool may be occupied by someone other than original rat-a-tat-tatter Colm O’Ciosoig. While some would grumble that it’s not the one true MBV without it being the classic late-’80s/early-’90s Shields-Butcher-Googe-O’Ciosoig lineup, my impish side thinks it would be kinda rad if these reunion shows turned out to be just Kevin Shields hunched over a guitar in front of a big-ass amp. …they had a drummer?
Doktor Avalanche ain’t busy, get him in.
@Ned Raggett: I’d prefer Doctor Killdrums.
@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: On Loveless, all of the drum parts were recorded by Colm, and then sampled and sequenced.
It’s not a true MBV reunion without Dave Conway… I’m just saying.
@so1omon: It was a joke.
The drums were usually mixed pretty low, you see…
the only times when a drummer isn’t somewhat replaceable are a) When they’re a recognizable personality like Ringo or Keith Moon, b) when they’re also the singer, like with the Romantics, or c) when their unique style is a big part of the band’s sound/image - again Keith Moon springs to mind. Otherwise, you don’t really see them very well back there anyway and there are tons of perfectly good drummers out there that could be plugged in and you couldn’t tell the difference. With MBV, if they hadn’t mentioned that it was a different drummer, how many people would have even known?
of course, in my experience the guy with the drums is often also the guy with the van, but maybe Kevin Shields’ dad isn’t going to be needing the station wagon that weekend.
@Nicolars: You are most wise.
OK, ok, ok. Look, I really love MBV, and I’m not trying to be one of those “hipper than thou” people, but are there really that many people that would care about an MBV reunion. I mean really care, not care about it because all the hipster media cares about it? I’m very into the idea of people caring about MBV, it just seems to me like MBV fans have always been kind of a small club.
@Dippinkind. As a drummer, I say pishaw to your hypothesis. I’d also add with a band like MBV that people tend to really be into, people would notice if it wasn’t Colm on the kit. Dude was actually a good drummer, if you ever get a chance to see some vintage footage, he brought a lot to the live shows. Of course, on the recordings, might as well have been a drum machine.
90 minute “you made me realise” pls kevin!!
so kevin, stage left, giant amp, mountain of pedals.
centrestage/stageright, two mannequins with dresses and long fringes with gtrs
upstage, dr rhythm.
Please don’t write “bloody” in the same sentence with “drummer’s stool” again. I’ve been a MBV fan since 1989, and still I read that wrong.
@Nicolars: What about Echo?
