I agree. This was one of the better ceremonies in recent memory, despite (or perhaps due to) the emphasis on performance over actual awards. Still, the final half-hour (i.e. Portnow's Complaint) could've been trimmed significantly.

And while everybody talks about the Stockhausen snub, note these other, somewhat more surprising "In Memoriam" snubs: Zola Taylor of The Platters, Factory Records founder Tony Wilson and Quiet Riot frontman Kevin Dubrow.

Just back from the Memphis Grammy Chapter's annual party and I was very excited to see Amy Winehouse win Best New Artist and Record of the Year. Feist was a welcome surprise, Kanye/Daft Punk's performance was fantastic and moving, and Amy Winehouse really blew everyone's doors off.

As for all the hating on Herbie Hancock for winning Album Of The Year, I could not disagree with people more. If you haven't heard the album, I can't really forgive the hating; it's a damn good album. Sure, I would have loved Kanye or Amy to win, but I think it's completely appropriate that Herbie Hancock won.

Kanye and Amy gave two of the most moving performances in recent Grammy history. For both of them to lose Album of the Year to Herbie Hancock salutes Joni Mitchell is a travesty. I’d have rather seen Foos or Vince Gill upset. Or Hancock win for an album consisting solely of “Watermelon Man” remixes.

Also, this is actually Barack Obama’s second Grammy—”Dreams from my Father” won the same category in 2006. And both Bill and Hillary Clinton are previous Grammy winners here. The category ought to be changed to Best Audiobook though, since that’s all that gets nominated now.

Totally saw this one coming–too much Grammy bait on the Hancock record for the academy to ignore. At least Leonard Cohen just got his first Grammy, so that’s nice. The speech about being the first jazz artist to win AOTY in 43 years should be taken w/a grain of salt, however, considering the record had all but nothing to do with jazz. Who wants a cappuccino?

Wow, they’re all psyched over at TWoP that Herbie won over Kanye, thinking about the huge tantrum Kanye’s probably throwing. Sorry, I actually like music and would like to see something popular AND worthwhile get recognized once in a while. /end Grammy hating
