And while everybody talks about the Stockhausen snub, note these other, somewhat more surprising “In Memoriam” snubs: Zola Taylor of The Platters, Factory Records founder Tony Wilson and Quiet Riot frontman Kevin Dubrow.

As for all the hating on Herbie Hancock for winning Album Of The Year, I could not disagree with people more. If you haven’t heard the album, I can’t really forgive the hating; it’s a damn good album. Sure, I would have loved Kanye or Amy to win, but I think it’s completely appropriate that Herbie Hancock won.

Also, this is actually Barack Obama’s second Grammy—”Dreams from my Father” won the same category in 2006. And both Bill and Hillary Clinton are previous Grammy winners here. The category ought to be changed to Best Audiobook though, since that’s all that gets nominated now.

All the previous “fogey” winners had, at the very least, sales on their side: from the Ray Charles deathbed album, to the Steely Dan album (gold going into the ceremony), Natalie Cole (multiplatinum). Even Tony Bennett Unplugged (until tonight, the lamest AOTY winner of all time) had a miniscule shred of sales and currency.

But this? This Hancock album was purchased by a few dozen people idly waiting for their lattes.

This is, honestly, a travesty. When the Grammys pick a shit AOTY, you can usually justify it by saying, “Well, hey, it sold well, and it’s an industry award.” Or when it’s a Fogey Favorite, you can say, “Cmon, all the old guard were listening to that record last year.” (For example. O Brother‘s semi-upset win six years ago.)

But THIS?! This is a record no one bought, no one heard, no one cared about. It’s farts rewarding farts for their fartiness. Ugh. I’m physically ill.

God, did I see him do that on the Grammys, or was it the American Music Awards show of said year? Either way, THAT was a performance.
