AP080210033983.jpgVince Gill on his “na na, I got a Grammy from a Beatle and you didn’t” dig at Kanye West during Sunday night’s Grammys: “He had said something about how he was gonna win Album of the Year later, and if not him, then Amy Winehouse was most deserving and not me or the Foo Fighters. So I decided to have a little fun. … I just saw him out of the corner of my eye when I was up there, and I decided I had to do it. He took a shot at Gretchen Wilson when he lost Best New Artist to her a few years ago, and so us rednecks stick together.” [MTV / Photo: AP]

    I would like to make it absolutely clear here and now that “rednecks” is the accepted term for “backwards assed country fuck” and it does not mean “people from the south”.

    As one of those “people from the south”, I’m not sticking together with Vince Gill on anything unless it’s his desire to stop making albums.

    (…but what he said was pretty funny)

    Can Vince Gill go one goddamn night without trying to trigger a race war?

  3. Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    @qyntellspitbull: That’s good stuff.

    @loudersoft: Agreed. I’m a native Texan. I can’t stand when some ignorant douche who happened to be yanked out of a crotch located somewhere below the Mason-Dixon line feels the need to speak on my behalf.

    @Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: “Rednecks” appear to have this mistaken notion that minorities are out to get them and that only fellow “rednecks” are their friends. They’ve got the second part right, but it’s only because they actually believe the first part is true.

    @Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: Double agreed. I’m an Alabamian, and I can crack an incest joke with the best of them, but why is it always about this “redneck pride” hogwash? Sigh. It gets so old.

    I’m pretty sure he was making a joke.

  7. tigerpop  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    Who’s Gretchen Wilson?

  8. loudersoft  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    @Chris N.: I’m pretty sure he was making a joke with the Beatle thing. His explanation of why he did it is what makes it insulting.

  9. Bob Loblaw  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    Vince seems remarkably unconcerned about sharing a stage with Non and General Zod.

  10. La Mareada  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    If he left the joke alone, people might have thought he had some wit. By explaining it, he confirmed he’s just as humorlessly egotistical as Kanye.

    Sounds like he forgot about Herbie Hancock.

  12. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2008

    @Lampbane: Remember that USAT piece we talked about on Friday, the one that *didn’t* mention Amy Winehouse? It had an accompanying graphic showing five critics’ picks for AOTY. All five gave Kanye their “will win” votes and four gave him their “should win” votes. And one critic actually gave her “should win” vote to Herbie.

    I snickered at the time. Guess I and Kanye were both wrong.

    @Bob Loblaw: FTW.

    Re: the “redneck” debate: [backs slowly out of the room]

        If Vince Gill were REALLY from the South, he’d know that you NEVER taunt a rapper unless you are armed… and have your piece out and ready to shoot back. Certainly that’s how it’s done in Alabama, where I live.

        I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought Vince sounded like a crass idiot with that crack.

    His comment was bitchy but funny. His explanation is just bitchy and insulting. Dick!
