Robert Plant on Radiohead: "What is this rhyming crap?" Robert Plant on the Red Hot Chili Peppers: "[like a] nursery rhyme." The Sun writer who got this tip is outraged at the thought of anyone comparing the Red Hot Chili Peppers to something as trivial as a poem for a sleepy child, but I actually think Plant's being kinda generous! Rather than generous, he's actually spot on. I think RHCP's nursery rhyme quality was part of the appeal (early on, at least). Anyway, it takes a rare talent to sing about Viking conquests and elf parties, Robert should know that not everyone is cut out for that.
I take mild issue with slagging Radiohead, but he could not be more correct about RHCP.
Wow, not to suck up Percy, but I've always loathed RHCP. Anthony Kiedis is repulsive.
I always think RHCP lyrics sound like something written by a hacky Dr. Seuss wannabe.
Kiedis is a HORRIBLE lyricist. If it's not baby talk forced into the songs, it's state names.I expect a RHCP stands and capitals song on Sesame Street any day now.
Beyond the use of the word "crap," I'm trying to understand Plant's insult. I don't really care one way or the other, but what song of radiohead's was playing that would make one says, "What's this rhyming crap?"
Wolf At The Door?
I bet Plant's secretly a Pulk/Pull fan.
A classmate of mine said that all RHCP songs sound the same (and I assume because of the lyrics as well as how all of RHCP's melodies sound similar). I agree with my classmate and disagree with this Sun writer.
I agree that Kiedis can't write lyrics worth a damn, but I love the Chili Peppers anyway. They have one of the most reliable knacks for gorgeous melodies and insanely hummable hooks in mainstream pop right now. And the words are no worse than, say, post-Beatles McCartney or Conor Oberst. Also, when was the last time Radiohead wrote rhyming lyrics? (Disclaimer: I haven't exactly listened to "In Rainbows" obsessively, so forgive me if there's rhyming on there.)
@sparkletone: Sorry, I totally couldn't see this before my previous comment was posted. But thanks for validating the "rhyming Radiohead" fallacy.
oh yeah, and Led Zeppelin's lyrics were art.
I lay awake last night trying to understand what he meant by 'rhyming crap' and I've decided to believe that he slurred 'non-rhyming crap' and was misheard. Which may not be true but at least I'll sleep.
Oh, and another vote for Beefheart in bars.
